Early detection of skin cancer
Dr. Nguyen Huu Quang, Deputy Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Rehabilitation, Deputy Head of the Melanoma Expert Group, Central Dermatology Hospital, said that recently, the Department of Plastic Surgery and Rehabilitation, Central Dermatology Hospital has received many patients who, after watching health news on TV and social networks, saw signs of melanoma, such as black patches and spots on the soles of their feet, came to the Central Dermatology Hospital for examination and treatment.
A patient over 60 years old saw a black lesion on the sole of the right foot that appeared about 3-10 years ago, over time the lesion gradually increased in size and became darker. Another case is a patient 30 years old, with a black lesion with a lesion size of about 11mm.
Here, patients are examined by doctors from the Department of Plastic Surgery and Rehabilitation and prescribed blood tests, ultrasound, dermoscopy - a special test in dermatology, which can detect early signs of skin cancer, biopsy tests...
After synthesizing the paraclinical results, the doctor determined that all patients had malignant melanoma in situ (MM).
"Fortunately for these patients, the disease is only in the early stages, requiring only surgical treatment to remove the entire tumor and reconstruct the defect. We have removed the tumor and continue to monitor the patient, scheduling regular check-ups within 5 years," said Dr. Nguyen Huu Quang.

Signs of melanoma
Dr. Nguyen Huu Quang, MD, PhD, said that melanoma is one of the most malignant skin cancers because it progresses rapidly and metastasizes far away. Although the disease is very malignant with a high rate of metastasis, if detected early and treated according to the correct regimen, the results will be good, with a very high 5-year survival rate, especially for melanoma in situ.
Every year, the Melanoma Specialist Group Clinic, Central Dermatology Hospital examines and detects about 25-30 new patients.
This expert recommends that the signs of melanoma are black lesions with a size of more than 6mm, progressing in size, and inconsistent in color in any location of the skin and mucous membranes, but for Vietnamese people, they often appear in extreme locations such as the hands, fingers, and toes.
Melanoma is a cancer that originates from pigment cells, often found in areas of the skin that are exposed to sunlight. However, the soles of the feet are an area that few people pay attention to and are easily overlooked. Strange spots here can be mistaken for calluses, corns, or warts.
Melanoma is not as responsive to chemotherapy or radiation as many other cancers. Therefore, radical surgical resection is vital. The safe surgical margin must be 10 times larger than the tumor thickness. Burning, puncturing, cutting without biopsy, or delaying treatment can cause cancer cells to spread and metastasize rapidly.
"If people see the above signs, patients should go to a specialized medical facility for early detection and timely treatment. This is very important, it can be treated thoroughly at the lowest possible cost and especially the patient's quality of life is improved, greatly reducing treatment costs," Dr. Quang emphasized.
