The 146th Inter- Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly opened on the evening of March 11 in the capital city of Manama, Bahrain. Permanent Vice President of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man and more than 70 leaders of parliaments of member countries attended the opening session.
Founded in 1889 with headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland), the IPU is one of the oldest multilateral organizations in the world. The IPU currently has 179 member parliaments and 14 regional parliamentary organizations, with the mission of promoting peace , democracy and sustainable development worldwide.
The 146th IPU Assembly takes place in a context where the world is facing complex and unpredictable developments. Hot spots remain unresolved and conflicts continue in many regions of the world. The Global Peace Index is now at its lowest level in the past 15 years.
With the theme "Promoting Peaceful Coexistence and Inclusive Societies: Combating Intolerance", this year's IPU aims to promote the joint efforts of the international community and legislative bodies to act together to ease current hot spots in the world, for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
Ethnic and religious conflicts, local wars, sovereignty , territorial and resource disputes, along with global challenges related to climate change, natural disasters, epidemics, etc., continue to develop in a complex manner, slowing down the process of economic recovery and development, affecting the lives of people around the world.
In that context, the goal of promoting "peaceful coexistence and inclusive societies" is more urgent than ever, requiring the efforts and cooperation of the international community and legislative bodies to unite and act to realize the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations and the IPU Action Strategy for Peace, Cooperation and Sustainable Development.
In his opening remarks, the host country Bahrain stressed that the 146th IPU General Assembly takes place in a special context, when the world is still affected by hostilities, wars and natural disasters. This requires parliaments to work together to promote their roles, to maintain international peace and security, while promoting the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.
Attending this IPU, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man is expected to give a speech presenting Vietnam's initiatives on issues raised at the General Assembly.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man met with Vice Chairman of the Lao National Assembly Sounthone Xayachak. At the meeting, discussing measures to enhance cooperation between the two National Assemblies, the two sides agreed to closely coordinate in preparing for the Conference of National Assembly Chairmen of Cambodia - Laos - Vietnam, scheduled for the end of this year; the two sides also agreed to closely coordinate at multilateral parliamentary forums, as well as during Laos's hosting of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in 2024.
