Hanoi Moi Newspaper had an interview with Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Tourism Tran Trung Hieu about orientation and solutions to more effectively exploit the tourism market from Hanoi to the Southwest.

More experiences for visitors
– How do you evaluate Southwestern tourism with the market of visitors from Hanoi, especially international visitors?
– The Southwest region is rich in resources, rich in cultural identity and friendly, simple people. For a long time, Southwest tourism has attracted and captivated tourists with experiences of rivers, gardens, listening to traditional music, etc. International visitors to Vietnam often spend a lot of time visiting, learning, and experiencing many lands and cultures, in which the Southwest is a favorite destination for many international visitors.
As the country's tourism center, over the years, Hanoi has organized activities to promote, advertise, and connect tourism with many localities across the country. Particularly for the Southwestern provinces, two-way promotion and advertising activities have been carried out continuously for about the past 10 years. Hanoi always wants to promote connections and build tourism routes connecting products from the capital to the Southwestern region so that tourists, especially international visitors, can have more experiences when coming to Vietnam.

- The promotion and advertising of tourism from the capital to the Southwest has been carried out for about 10 years. How effective has this activity been, sir?
– In 10 years of promoting tourism in the provinces of the Southwest, Hanoi – the Southwest tourism has achieved many results. After survey trips (famtrips) and promotional activities, many travel agencies have built connecting products, promoted Southwest tours and brought many groups of tourists here. Southwest tourism is also known by many domestic and foreign tourists and regularly updates new products.
On the other hand, the number of tourists from the southern provinces, including the Southwest region, to Hanoi and the northern provinces for tourism increases every year. This is a signal that the promotion, advertising and connection activities between the capital and the Southwest localities are bringing about clear results.

– Many opinions say that, despite the achievements in promotion and advertising, tourism in the Southwest mainly attracts international visitors, while the number of domestic visitors from the North, including the Capital to the Southwest is still not as expected. What do you think about this?
– It is true that tourism in the Southwest region still faces many difficulties in attracting tourists. The provinces in this region are still weak in terms of transport infrastructure and quality accommodation, while tourism products are quite similar. In addition, the high airfare from Hanoi to the Southern provinces also makes Northern tourists hesitant. However, with the upgrading of infrastructure and the launch of new tourism products, the West will certainly attract both international and domestic tourists.
Post-merger development cooperation
– Recently, the Hanoi Department of Tourism continued to promote tourism in the Southwest, specifically in the two provinces of Vinh Long and Dong Thap. What is different about this promotion compared to the previous ones, sir?
– We decided to immediately carry out tourism promotion and advertising work in the context that the whole country has completed the arrangement and merger of provincial-level administrative units, opening up new opportunities for regional linkage and cooperation in economic and tourism development. The merger of Vinh Long province with Ben Tre province and Tra Vinh province; Dong Thap province merged with Tien Giang has created a more open development space, connecting the rich Mekong Delta and the land rich in Southern cultural identity. This is an important opportunity for localities to strengthen connections, promote potential and strengths, contributing to promoting sustainable tourism development in the new period.

Currently, localities are focusing on active solutions to effectively implement the national growth target of 8.3 - 8.5% in 2025, in which the tourism industry strives to reach at least 25 million international visitors and 150 million domestic visitors for the whole year. 2025 is of special importance - the year of acceleration, breakthrough, and completion, the final year of implementing the 5-year socio-economic development plan 2021 - 2025, towards successfully implementing the goals of the 10-year socio-economic development strategy 2021 - 2030. Therefore, tourism promotion activities of Hanoi and the southwestern provinces show the efforts and determination of localities to complete the common goals of the whole country.
– So how has Hanoi demonstrated its “locomotive” role to make tourism promotion activities in the localities after the merger effective, sir?
– The Capital Tourism Industry always clearly defines its role in the common mission of the whole country. Therefore, in many promotional activities and product development, Hanoi is always one of the pioneering localities. Hanoi increasingly affirms its position as a major tourist center of the country, a leading destination in the region, taking sustainable development as the foundation, with strong breakthrough growth in products, number of visitors and revenue.
Many new tourism activities, events and products have been created, bringing new experiences to tourists. During this tourism promotion campaign in the Southwestern provinces, Hanoi also introduced many new tourism products, especially autumn-winter tourism with many unique experiences for domestic and foreign tourists. The capital's tourism products harmoniously combine the preservation of identity and creativity with the breath of the times, with special attention to green and environmentally friendly factors. This is also the message that Hanoi wants to share with other provinces in building new products.

- To promote and link tourism between Hanoi and the Southwest more effectively, contributing to tourism growth in the coming time, what suggestions do you have?
– Hanoi alone will not be enough to enrich the experience for tourists. Therefore, we wish to further promote the destination value of the thousand-year-old heritage, the gateway to welcome international visitors on their journey to discover Vietnam by constantly expanding cooperation with localities with rich tourism potential, including the Southwest region. The connection and cooperation between Hanoi and the Southwest provinces will be a strong lever, turning potential into attractive tourism products, while bringing sustainable benefits to all parties.
In the coming time, Hanoi will continue and regularly strengthen cooperation with the Western provinces in building unique, diverse, and highly attractive inter-provincial and inter-regional tourism product chains, connecting destinations according to each theme such as cultural - heritage linkage, nature - experience linkage, culinary - shopping linkage, craft village - river tourism linkage, etc.
In addition, Hanoi is ready to support the Western provinces in organizing promotional activities in the capital; sharing and supporting in training tourism human resources and promoting destinations. In addition, Hanoi will continue to organize famtrip groups with the participation of prestigious travel agencies in the capital, KOLs, Tiktokers to the Western provinces to cooperate in promoting, sharing information and linking tours, routes, and building new products suitable for domestic and foreign tourists.
