Apple is preparing a significant upgrade for its next low-cost iPhone, expected to be called the iPhone 17e. According to a new report from analyst Jeff Pu, the device could launch in early 2026 with an 18MP front camera that supports Center Stage, similar to the high-end iPhone 17 series.
The new front camera is considered a big improvement over previous generations of iPhone SE. According to the description, the square sensor allows users to take photos or record videos vertically or horizontally without rotating the device. The Center Stage feature also automatically adjusts the frame, zooms in or rotates according to the user's movements during video calls.
This move comes as Apple is changing its product launch schedule. Instead of pushing all iPhone models into September, the company may shift some of them to winter or early year announcements. The iPhone 17e is expected to fit into the new strategy.
Putting a completely new camera on the low-cost model could be a departure from Apple’s tradition. Previously, the iPhone SE models used older components to keep costs down. However, if Jeff Pu’s information is correct, the company is narrowing the gap between the cheapest device and the high-end iPhone models. The report also says the 17e could use the same A19 chip as the standard iPhone 17.

These upgrades suggest the iPhone maker is looking to improve the underlying hardware across its entire lineup, meaning the company’s “cheap” options will likely offer less differentiation than its more expensive models, especially in terms of camera experience.
For users who frequently make video calls or take selfies, the camera with Center Stage feature can be an attractive factor. The motion tracking feature makes FaceTime calls smoother and improves group recording. In the lower segment of Apple, the appearance of technology that is reserved for high-end devices is a notable change, suitable for students, parents or ordinary users with basic photography needs.
The iPhone 17e is expected to launch in early 2026, possibly in February. The device is expected to retain a single rear camera and not feature a 120Hz display to cut costs. However, Apple seems to want to add more practical use value to this line.
