The G77 was established on June 15, 1964, when 77 developing countries signed the “Joint Declaration of 77 Countries” at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNTAD) in Geneva. To date, the G77 has 134 members.

The G77 is an important gathering of developing countries within the UN framework to protect and promote the interests of Southern countries, enhance the position and voice of developing countries in negotiating international economic issues within the UN and enhance South-South cooperation.

In 1994, China joined the G77 Group. Since then, the Group's name in official documents and statements has become the G77 Group and China.

Vietnam is one of the founding members of the G77 Group, a responsible member, actively contributing and participating in solving regional and international issues in the G77 Group. Vietnam's participation in the G77 has demonstrated its role in fulfilling international obligations, participating in multilateral forums, contributing to promoting the voices and interests of developing countries, including promoting the priorities and interests of Vietnam.

Previously, on December 15-16, 2022, the Special Ministerial Conference of the G77 and China took place at the United Nations Headquarters (New York, USA) at the initiative of Pakistan - the G77 Chair in 2022. The conference had the theme "Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Addressing Current Challenges and Adapting to Future Crises", focusing on discussing measures to mobilize finance, promote climate action, and enhance trade and investment cooperation to implement the SDGs.

Pakistan - which holds the G77 and China chair in 2022 - has handed over the reins to Cuba, which holds the chair in 2023.

Vietnam and Cuba officially established diplomatic relations on December 2, 1960, opening a new page in the history of friendship between the two peoples located on the Eastern and Western halves of the globe.

Over the past half century, since the two countries established diplomatic relations, the Vietnamese and Cuban peoples have always stood side by side in the struggle for independence and freedom as well as in the cause of building and defending the socialist Fatherland in each country.

It can be said that in contemporary world history, there are few relationships as special as the relationship between the two Parties, two States and people of Vietnam and Cuba.
