Pest control on fruit trees

Việt NamViệt Nam21/03/2024

Currently, farmers in the province have converted 14,629 hectares of low-efficiency agricultural land to grow fruit trees. Of which, 4,815 hectares are longan trees, 1,313 hectares are lychee trees, 2,617 hectares are banana trees, 1,819 hectares are orange trees, 2,122 hectares are grapefruit trees, the rest are other fruit trees. At this time, fruit trees such as longan, lychee and citrus trees are in the stage of flower differentiation, flowering and fruit setting. The weather forecast in the coming time will continue to have many cloudy days, drizzle, high humidity, favorable for some pests to arise and cause damage. In order to proactively apply technical measures to limit the impact of weather and pests on flowering and fruit setting of fruit trees, farmers are focusing on implementing measures to care for and prevent pests and diseases.

Tien Lu district has 954.4 hectares of fruit trees, of which 494.6 hectares are longan, 145.1 hectares are orange, 76.2 hectares are grapefruit, 75.1 hectares are lychee, and the remaining are other fruit trees such as jackfruit, apple, custard apple, dragon fruit, and guava. At this time, the main fruit trees such as longan, lychee, and citrus trees are in the stage of developing flower stalks, flowering, and setting young fruit. The weather in recent days has been cloudy, drizzly, and high humidity, so pests and diseases have arisen and caused severe damage to fruit trees. In particular, on citrus trees, leaf miners, aphids, thrips, and red spiders continue to arise and cause minor damage, scattered in gardens that are sprouting new shoots and flowering (the gardens have not been controlled). On longan and lychee trees, downy mildew and anthracnose appear and cause scattered damage, with the damage rate in high places being 1-3% of flower clusters (disease level 1); Flower stem borers and inchworms appear and cause light, scattered damage; high density in some places is 0.3-0.5 insects/flower cluster; mealybugs and aphids cause local damage in some densely planted gardens, with little attention to pruning; brown stink bugs develop sporadically over winter. In addition, brown leafhoppers cause scattered damage in some longan gardens that are sprouting. To effectively prevent pests and diseases, the district's professional unit has increased recommendations for farmers to proactively apply measures such as: If there is impure rain (acid rain), it is necessary to spray clean water to wash impurities on the tree canopy. Supplement nutrients for trees by combining foliar fertilizer spraying with pesticide spraying to reduce young fruit drop. For trees that grow and develop poorly, composted organic fertilizer or soaked manure water, phosphate fertilizer can be added to supplement watering to help the trees bloom, pollinate, and set fruit smoothly.

In the longan growing area of Hung Yen city, gardeners are actively monitoring the weather and pests to take effective preventive measures. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, a farmer in Hong Nam commune, said: According to the recommendations of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the current period, I and gardeners are proactively preventing downy mildew and anthracnose on longan trees with specific pesticides such as Amistar 250SC, Phytocide 50WP, Dosay 45WP, Ridomil Gold 68 WG. If during the flowering and fruit setting period, there are many cloudy days, drizzle, and high humidity, we will spray again for the second time before the flowers bloom or after the fruit sets. For mealybugs, aphids, thrips, inchworms, flower stem borers... appearing at high density, control with drugs such as Movento 150OD, Kola 700WG, Radiant 60SC, Brightin 4.0 EC.

Comrade Le Minh Nam, Deputy Head of the Plant Protection Sub-Department, said: To effectively prevent and control pests and diseases on fruit trees, farmers need to regularly check their fields, accurately predict and estimate the time of occurrence and the level of damage caused by pests and diseases, especially the main pests and diseases in flowering and young fruit set. On longan, lychee and mango trees, on days without rain and temperatures above 18 degrees Celsius, farmers need to spray to prevent downy mildew and anthracnose as soon as the buds develop and mature until before the flowers bloom with the drugs Phytocide 50WP, Dosay 45WP, Amistar 250SC, Ridomil Gold 68WG, Jack M9 72 WP...; during the young fruit set period, if the weather is still cloudy, drizzling, and the air humidity is high, a second dose of one of the above drugs is needed. For pests such as tube mealybugs, aphids, and whiteflies in high density areas, spray with Movento 150OD, Confidor 700 WG, Kola 700 WG, etc.; to prevent inchworms and stink bugs, use Radiant 60SC, Dylan 2EC, etc. On citrus trees, farmers need to prevent leafminers, leafhoppers, thrips, and aphids in high density areas (mainly during the period when the tree sprouts new shoots, flowers, and sets young fruit) with special drugs such as Movento 150OD, Radiant 60SC, Midan 10WP, etc.; For red spiders, prevent with special drugs such as Dylan 2EC, Detect 50WP, KingSpider 93SC... Local areas infected with yellow leaf disease, root rot (caused by fungi and root-damaging nematodes) appearing at mild to moderate levels need to apply a comprehensive solution such as: Spraying on leaves combined with watering with special fungicides such as Ridomil Gold 68WG, Ricide 72WP... at the same time using biological products such as Tricoderma, Tricho Plus, Vita fungus, Vita nematode or composted organic fertilizer with biological products... to increase the disease resistance of plants and reduce the source of disease in the field. Severely damaged trees must be cut down, diseased plants destroyed, all residues and sources of disease in the garden must be treated before new crops can be planted. In addition, mosquito bugs and caterpillars appearing on guava trees during the flowering and young fruiting period need to be prevented with Peran 50EC, Map-Permethrin 50EC... sprayed before applying fruit wrapping measures.
