PV GAS – 35 years of innovation and technological pioneering in Vietnam's gas industry.

Over its 35 years of formation and development (1990 – 2025), Vietnam Gas Corporation (PV GAS) has affirmed its pioneering position in the gas industry, marked by a series of groundbreaking scientific and technological achievements. From its early days of establishment with the task of collecting, transporting, and processing associated gas, PV GAS has proactively approached, mastered, and developed advanced technologies, successfully implementing many large-scale projects, contributing to ensuring national energy security and promoting sustainable socio-economic development.

Immediately after its establishment, PV GAS implemented the fast track project for bringing gas ashore from the Bach Ho gas system, which was later expanded into the Cuu Long basin gas system by utilizing reservoir pressure and optimizing flow regimes. This solution completely eliminated the practice of burning associated gas, saving valuable resources, protecting the marine environment, and supplying gas to the Ba Ria thermal power plant. This success laid the foundation for the formation of Vietnam's gas industry and opened up a path to modern exploration and transportation technology.

The Dinh Co Gas Processing Plant – a key scientific and technological project of PV GAS – contributes to ensuring national energy security and the sustainable development of Vietnam's gas industry.

In the field of gas processing, PV GAS completed the construction and officially put into operation the Dinh Co Gas Processing Plant on July 9, 1999 – the first plant in Vietnam to apply deep cooling technology, low-temperature condensation combined with a Turbo Expander and Joule-Thomson valve, and integrated heat exchange to improve the recovery efficiency of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and condensate from fields in the Cuu Long basin. This is an important technological advancement, helping to improve the recovery efficiency of liquid products and optimize product value.

Building on its achievements, PV GAS invested in and put into operation the Nam Con Son Gas Processing Plant, the largest in Vietnam. In December 2002, the first gas flow from the Nam Con Son basin was brought ashore to consumers, significantly increasing PV GAS's gas supply to the market. By August 2025, the Nam Con Son gas system had reached the milestone of safely transporting 110 billion cubic meters of gas.

As part of the Southern region's gas industry development strategy, in 2017, the Ca Mau Gas Processing Plant (GPP Ca Mau) was put into operation, applying Ortloff's proprietary SCORE technology – integrating heat exchange, deep cooling, condensation, and turbo expansion solutions to maximize the recovery efficiency of high-value liquid products from the PM3-46 Cai Nuoc gas system in the Southwest region.

In the transportation sector, PV GAS designed and operated the Nam Con Son pipeline – the world's longest two-phase pipeline at the time of its commissioning, simultaneously transporting natural gas and condensate from offshore fields to the shore. The success of this project demonstrates Vietnam's capacity to design, construct, and operate complex offshore and onshore projects, affirming its technical standing on the global gas industry map.

Entering the energy transition phase, PV GAS continues to affirm its pioneering role with the construction and operation of the Thi Vai LNG Terminal – the first LNG terminal in Vietnam. This project not only ushers in an era of importing and using liquefied natural gas (LNG), but also plays a central role in ensuring energy security, meeting the trend of emission reduction and sustainable development. Simultaneously, PV GAS is expanding its LNG terminal system in many strategic areas in the North and North Central regions, combining it with a multimodal transportation model (pipeline, waterway, road, and rail) to enhance flexibility and market responsiveness.

In addition to adopting modern technology from international partners, PV GAS also focuses on on-site innovation. Many technical improvements and operational optimization solutions have been researched and successfully applied, helping to increase productivity, reduce costs, and ensure absolute safety for the national gas system. Typical solutions such as controlling water content in the gas-condensate stream of Block 06.1; supplying permeate gas from the Ca Mau GPP to the Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant; controlling the quality of gas and condensate at Thien Ung; and managing liquid flow in the two-phase pipelines of the Nam Con Son 2 gas system… have been honored at the Vietnam Science and Technology Innovation Award (VIFOTEC) and many other oil and gas industry awards. Many initiatives not only bring tens of billions of VND in economic benefits annually but also contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions, demonstrating the company's environmental responsibility.

During the period 2020-2025, the emulation movement for creative labor and innovation at PV GAS resulted in 724 unit-level initiatives and 119 corporation-level initiatives, with a total value of over 1,700 billion VND in benefits (excluding initiatives whose value has not yet been quantified). These initiatives have been effectively applied in practice, contributing to the safe and continuous management and operation of gas facilities, saving costs, preventing waste, and improving production and business efficiency.

With the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of its entire gas infrastructure over the past 35 years, PV GAS has become a model of technical and technological management. The team of engineers, experts, and workers at PV GAS continuously research and master technology, participate in developing basic standards for gas products, and contribute to the development and improvement of Vietnamese Standards and National Technical Regulations on natural gas, LNG, and gas pipelines.

Outstanding contributions in the field of science and technology have earned PV GAS many prestigious awards from the Party, State, and Government, including the First, Second, and Third Class Labor Orders; the Second and Third Class Independence Orders; the Third Class Military Merit Order; the title of Hero of Labor; as well as emulation flags and national and oil and gas industry-level science and technology innovation awards.

PV GAS's 35-year journey is a clear testament to its capacity for innovation, adaptability, and continuous improvement. From mastering complex technologies in gas extraction, transportation, and processing, to deploying modern LNG infrastructure projects and developing an integrated energy supply chain, PV GAS has brought Vietnam's gas industry's science and technology closer to international standards, ready to meet the requirements of a modern, environmentally friendly, and deeply integrated energy sector.
