Quang Binh: 4 people missing, dozens of landslides and isolation due to flooding

(Chinhphu.vn) – Unseasonal floods have caused great damage to Quang Binh province, including 4 missing people, 34 flooded and isolated areas, 14 landslides, and many households having to evacuate to safety.

On the afternoon of June 13, the Standing Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and the Steering Committee for Civil Defense of Quang Binh province said that due to the impact of storm No. 1, in recent days, the locality has had moderate rain, heavy rain, and in some places very heavy rain, with rainfall reaching 347.8 mm in some places.

Currently, the water level of Kien Giang River at Le Thuy station is 2.91 m, 0.1 m above alert level 3; at Kien Giang station it is 10.93 m, below alert level 2; the remaining rivers are all below alert level 1. Reservoirs in the province are being operated safely.

In Tan Ninh, Duy Ninh, and Ham Ninh communes ( Quang Ninh district), water has begun to flood some low-lying residential areas.

The province recorded 34 flooded and isolated spots and 14 landslides. Specifically, on National Highway 9B, culvert 25 (in the area of ​​Lang Ho Border Post) was flooded about 1 meter deep. On National Highway 15, at Bung Bridge Km562+200, the water was over 1 meter deep at both ends of the bridge, causing traffic congestion. The section from Km561+300 to Km561+950 was also flooded over 1 meter deep.

The water level at Ca Roang 2 underground, Thuong Trach commune (Ca Roong Border Guard Station) rose about 1 meter, causing traffic disruption from Ca Roong 1 village to Ca Roong village.

Landslides also occurred on many routes, including National Highway 9E and National Highway 12A. At Km122+830, landslides filled the longitudinal ditch and road surface, with a volume of about 15 m³. At Km34+200 and Km34+400 on National Highway 9C (Kim Thuy commune), the landslide volume was about 20 m³ and 10 m³, respectively. Although cars and motorbikes could still travel, due to prolonged heavy rain, the high risk of landslides limited people's travel.

In Le Thuy district, considered the "flood center" of the province, the authorities have evacuated 17 households with 78 people in Tan Ly village (Lam Thuy commune) and 6 households in Mit village (Kim Thuy commune) to safety.

Unseasonal floods in Quang Binh have left four people missing. Specifically, in Minh Hoa district, at 8 p.m. on June 12, two people who were looking for frogs were unfortunately swept away by the flood. In Bo Trach district, at 5 a.m. on June 13, two people in Nhan Hai village, Nhan Trach commune, went fishing on the Dinh river and are still missing. Currently, local authorities and functional forces are actively searching for the victims.

Regarding agriculture , the whole province had 20,835.85 hectares of rice and 417.72 hectares of crops flooded; 121 fish cages, 37 oyster racks and about 1,500 crabs raised in plastic boxes were severely affected; 1,553.322 hectares of aquaculture ponds, fish and rice were washed away. The storm also sank 3 local fishing boats.

On June 13, Vice Chairman of Quang Binh Provincial People's Committee Phan Phong Phu inspected the actual flood situation in localities, requesting authorities at all levels and relevant departments and branches to be ready to respond according to the "4 on-site" motto, ensuring absolute safety for people's lives and minimizing property damage.

The Vice Chairman of the Quang Binh Provincial People's Committee noted that localities should urgently count the damage to support people in a timely manner. At the same time, they should promptly supply suitable rice varieties to replant the damaged summer-autumn crop. Along with that, it is necessary to proactively develop plans to protect works and projects under construction, especially in the fields of irrigation and transportation, to minimize damage caused by extreme weather.
