All offices nationwide, including 50 in Bangkok and 878 in other areas, are ready to register same-sex marriages. Deputy Minister Theerarat Samrejwanich praised the law as an important milestone for Thai society in recognizing and supporting equality for all sexual orientations.
Ms. Theerarat Samrejwanich also sent her best wishes to gay couples who are getting married in the near future, hoping that they will build a happy and harmonious family life together.
It took four years for both houses of parliament to get there. The House of Representatives passed the bill on March 27, with 400 votes in favor and 10 against. The bill was then approved by the Senate on June 18 and is expected to become law on January 22, 2025.
With the passage of the law, Thailand becomes the first country in Southeast Asia and the third in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.
The bill would recognize marriage for couples aged 18 and over, giving them inheritance rights, tax benefits and the right to adopt children. Notably, the bill would use the term “marriage” instead of the titles “wife” and “husband” in marriage, a move aimed at eliminating the gender binary.
This landmark law positions Thailand as a leader in protecting LGBTQ+ rights in Southeast Asia, helping to boost tourism and the economy in the future.
