According to statistics from the International Trade Center (ITC), in 2022, Belgium, Germany, France, China, and Japan were the five largest markets supplying rubber to the Netherlands. Except for Belgium and Germany, the Netherlands' rubber imports from these markets increased in both volume and value compared to 2021.
In 2022, Vietnam was the 10th largest rubber supplier to the Netherlands with 8.82 thousand tons, worth 16.13 million USD, up 53.7% in volume and 28.9% in value compared to 2021. Vietnam's rubber market share accounted for 2.76% of the Netherlands' total rubber imports, higher than the 2.02% level in 2021.
Thus, in the Dutch market, Vietnam's rubber market share still accounts for a small proportion of the total rubber imported by the Netherlands. Meanwhile, the Netherlands has increased rubber imports from Thailand and China, so the rubber market share of these two markets in 2022 is also higher than in 2021.
After the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Vietnamese rubber industry is facing many difficulties and challenges from the world market and internal policy problems. These factors limit the competitiveness of the rubber industry as well as Vietnamese rubber enterprises.
Competition among natural rubber producing and exporting countries will become fiercer in terms of price, product quality, commercial reputation and the ability to meet increasingly stringent sustainability standards.
Accordingly, the Vietnamese rubber industry must implement unified quality management nationwide, increase the application of advanced techniques, shift product structure according to market requirements, expand investment in deep processing, gradually form a supporting rubber industry; at the same time, continue to promote the reorganization of the rubber industry according to the production value chain, and enhance competitiveness in the international market.
On the other hand, Vietnam's natural rubber exports still depend heavily on the Chinese consumer market and only partially meet the needs of other markets, thus facing many difficulties in penetrating other large markets such as the United States, Japan, EU, etc.
In the Dutch market, Vietnamese rubber has to compete with rubber from Thailand and Ivory Coast. Therefore, businesses need to diversify their products to meet the needs of the Dutch market in order to boost exports to this market.
