Economic scale of 34 new provinces and cities: Ho Chi Minh City is number 1, Tay Ninh and Lam Dong are in the top

The country has 34 provinces and centrally-run cities as of June 12. In terms of economy, the combined GRDP of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City will reach nearly 3.8 million billion VND in 2023. Our country has also revealed many "super-large" production "factories".

On the morning of June 12, the National Assembly officially passed a historic resolution on the merger of provincial-level administrative units. Accordingly, the country has 34 provincial-level administrative units remaining, including 28 provinces and 6 centrally-run cities (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Hue, Da Nang, Can Tho ).

One of the important goals of the reorganization of provincial administrative units is to expand development space while maximizing the potential and advantages of each locality.

Based on preliminary statistical data for 2023 from the General Statistics Office, VietNamNet preliminarily calculated the change in economic scale of provinces and cities after the merger.

In terms of GRDP (gross regional product) scale at current prices in 2023, Ho Chi Minh City will reach over 2.5 million billion VND, about 2 times the GRDP of Hanoi , accounting for 24% of the country's GDP.

Ranked second is Hanoi with GRDP reaching more than 1.29 million billion VND.

Among 34 provinces and cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are the only two localities nationwide with GRDP exceeding 1 quadrillion VND in 2023.

In addition to the above two localities, in the top 10 provinces and cities with the highest GRDP scale in our country in 2023, there are also: Hai Phong City reaching 582,976 billion VND; Dong Nai reaching 548,726 billion VND; Bac Ninh reaching nearly 401,510 billion VND; Phu Tho reaching 318,200 billion VND; Quang Ninh reaching 313,595 billion VND; Tay Ninh reaching 279,339 billion VND; Lam Dong and Thanh Hoa reaching 276,733 billion VND and 276,539 billion VND, respectively.

Cao Bang is the locality with the lowest GRDP in the country, approximately 22,254 billion VND.

Regarding domestic budget revenue in 2023, Ho Chi Minh City is still leading the country with 395,110 billion VND, Hanoi ranks second with 381,449 billion VND.

In the top 10 provinces and cities with the highest domestic budget revenue in 2023, in addition to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, there are: Hai Phong City (63,164 billion VND), Dong Nai (51,403 billion VND), Da Nang (39,862 billion VND), Quang Ninh (39,207 billion VND), Hung Yen (approximately 38,939 billion VND), Phu Tho (38,505 billion VND), Bac Ninh (nearly 37,812 billion VND) and Ninh Binh (36,609 billion VND).

Cao Bang continues to be the locality with the lowest domestic budget revenue in the country, reaching only nearly 1,311 billion VND.

Regarding foreign direct investment (FDI) attraction, according to preliminary data in 2023, the country has 9 provinces and cities with registered FDI capital reaching over 1 billion USD. Of which, Ho Chi Minh City leads with over 8 billion USD, followed by Hai Phong with 4.93 billion USD.

Khanh Hoa recorded registered FDI capital of nearly 4.08 billion USD; Hung Yen reached 3.63 billion USD; Quang Ninh reached over 3.19 billion USD; Bac Ninh reached 2.34 billion USD.

Lam Dong, Nghe An and Dong Nai have registered FDI capital of 1.34 billion USD, 1.33 billion USD and 1.2 billion USD respectively.

Regarding goods exports, according to preliminary data from the Customs Department, the country's goods export turnover in 2024 will reach 405.53 billion USD. Notably, after merging provincial administrative units, our country has many large-scale goods production "factories".

Of which, Ho Chi Minh City still leads the country in exporting goods, reaching nearly 89 billion USD, accounting for 21.9% of the country's total export turnover.

Bac Ninh firmly holds the second position with an export turnover exceeding 70 billion USD. Hai Phong City ranks third, reaching 40.9 billion USD. Of the total export turnover of the country, Bac Ninh accounts for 17.3%, Hai Phong City accounts for 10%.

According to the ranking of the top 10 localities with the highest export turnover in 2024, in addition to Ho Chi Minh City, Bac Ninh and Hai Phong, there are: Dong Nai (29.93 billion USD); Phu Tho (28.44 billion USD); Thai Nguyen (27.38 billion USD); Hanoi (19.2 billion USD); Tay Ninh (16.2 billion USD); Ninh Binh (nearly 16 billion USD) and Dong Thap (nearly 9.1 billion USD).
