Nico Gonzalez was the only player retained from last weekend's Premier League defeat to Newcastle, with City's top scorer Erling Haaland also dropping to the bench.
“I would like to change all 11, but there are not enough players to do that,” the Spaniard told TNT Sports . “If you have 22 players and you only use 11 at all times, then you only have 11 players. We have to play together, we have to rotate because there are too many games. We need freshness and we have to let everyone contribute.”
Guardiola also stressed that the players selected to start are all of high calibre and are all internationals. He said: “They are great players. The schedule is very heavy, we just played Newcastle on Sunday. That's why I chose this squad."
Guardiola's decision to rotate almost his entire squad was seen as risky, and as a result, Man City suffered a 2-0 defeat to Leverkusen. Even when Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, Haaland and Rayan Cherki were brought on in the second half, the English team still failed to score.
This result caused Man City to fall to 6th place with 10 points in the Champions League qualifying round.
