Resolutely fight against crime at sea

In early June, in the sea area about 80 nautical miles southeast of Hon Khoai, the Working Group of the Vietnam Coast Guard (CSB) Department of Professional Affairs and Law in coordination with the forces of CSB Region 4 discovered a fishing vessel with license plate TG-93998 TS showing suspicious signs, so they asked to stop the vehicle and conduct an inspection.

At the time of inspection, there were 5 crew members on board, transporting about 25,000 liters of DO oil without invoices or documents proving the legal origin of the goods. According to the initial statements of the crew members, this was the amount of oil that the cargo owner hired to transport from the sea adjacent to international waters to consume in the southern provinces. This is just one of hundreds of cases of law violations that the Coast Guard has discovered, arrested, and handled in recent times.

The smuggled oil tanker was discovered and seized by the Coast Guard on June 11, 2025 in the Southwest sea.

According to Colonel Luong Dinh Hung, Director of the Vietnam Coast Guard's Department of Professional Affairs and Law, recently, the methods and tricks of criminals at sea have become increasingly sophisticated, reckless, and daring. Some new tricks have appeared such as: Subjects using fishing boats converted into ships containing smuggled gasoline and oil; using fake foreign license plates to illegally trade gasoline and oil at sea; subjects using large-capacity vehicles, frequently changing names, vehicle numbers, routes, and rotating records, invoices, and transportation documents to deal with authorities when inspected....

Along with that, many illegal owners also hire Vietnamese workers to work illegally on foreign oil smuggling ships; stockpile military weapons and are ready to fight back against authorities when discovered and arrested.

Major General Vu Trung Kien, Deputy Commander of the Law of the Vietnam Coast Guard, said: In order to effectively perform the function of managing security, order, safety and ensuring compliance with the law in the seas and islands of the whole country, the Party Committee and the Coast Guard Command have focused on leading, directing and building agencies and units in the entire force to gradually develop in a solid direction, meeting the requirements of the task. At the same time, thoroughly grasp and strictly implement the plans and directives of the superiors on the fight against smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods, and drug crime prevention.

Along with that, agencies and units of the Coast Guard always grasp, proactively and comprehensively implement, resolutely and effectively the assigned tasks. Notably, the work of grasping, synthesizing, evaluating, forecasting and advising, proposing to handle the situation at sea in accordance with the policies and measures of the Party, the State, the Central Military Commission, and the Ministry of National Defense . The work of fighting against crimes related to drugs, smuggling, trade fraud; search and rescue at sea has achieved high efficiency. The quality of training contents, especially training on law and professional skills, is focused on. The construction of a regular system is maintained and strengthened. Proactively develop plans to implement peak periods, strengthen the work of grasping the situation, fighting special projects and cases, focusing on crimes related to drugs, smuggling of gasoline, coal, cigarettes, firecrackers, etc.

With the spirit of overcoming difficulties and resolutely fighting against all kinds of crimes at sea, in the first 6 months of 2025, the Coast Guard arrested, investigated and handled 646 cases with 834 criminals and violators at sea and in coastal areas. Of which, 44 cases were prosecuted with 58 subjects, 553 cases were administratively sanctioned with 577 subjects; 38 cases were jointly handed over and handled with 100 subjects; 11 cases with 82 subjects are being handled. The total amount of administrative fines and the value of the seized evidence is about 50 billion VND.
