In some communes and towns such as Hoang Dan (Tam Duong), Yen Duong, Dai Dinh (Tam Dao) ... the green rice fields are in the stage of preparing to bloom, this is a very important period, deciding the yield and output of crops. However, due to the lack of rain and dry weather since the beginning of the year, the rice plants are at risk of water shortage, affecting the yield of the crop.
Mr. Phung Van Thuy, Vice Chairman of Hoang Dan Commune People's Committee shared: The whole commune has nearly 400 hectares of agricultural land, of which nearly 300 hectares are for rice cultivation, the rest are for growing crops. However, the prolonged dry weather, the water level in rivers and lakes is low, not ensuring irrigation water for the crop areas in the area. Up to now (April 24), the whole commune has about 50 hectares of rice in a state of drought and water shortage, significantly affecting the yield and quality of crops.
To overcome the above situation and minimize the damage caused by drought to agricultural production, local authorities have increased propaganda and information on weather and hydrological forecasts to the people and closely coordinated with relevant units to install field pumps and build embankments to create water sources for irrigation of crops in the area.
Managing and exploiting the irrigation system, regulating irrigation water for agricultural production in the communes and towns of the three districts of Tam Dao, Tam Duong and Binh Xuyen, Tam Dao Irrigation Company Limited is responsible for irrigating nearly 5,000 hectares of the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, of which the rice area is more than 4,000 hectares.
Due to the complicated weather, no rain combined with hot weather, the water level in the reservoirs, rivers and streams managed by the company has decreased. Some of them have run out of water such as Phan Lan Thuong, San Keng, Dong Nhap, Huong Da.
Currently, the water source on the streams is almost exhausted, so the area to get water from the streams is facing many difficulties, especially at Vai Lang dam irrigating about 87.1 hectares, Trai Moi dam irrigating about 64 hectares, Dong Bua dam irrigating about 60 hectares has run out of water to serve production.
Mr. Nguyen Chi Thanh, Head of Water and Construction Management Department of Tam Dao Irrigation Company Limited, said: To proactively combat drought for crops, the company has installed 12 field pumps. Organized the connection of additional suction pipes, dredging of border gates, channels, suction tanks, and dams. Repaired and repaired damaged irrigation works and machinery, dredged and dredged sedimentation areas to create the best conditions for production. In particular, mobilized all staff and workers to carry out drought prevention work day and night, organized strict management of water resources, provided water promptly and economically, did not waste water, and strived to ensure water for the whole crop.
In Phuc Yen city, the water source at some irrigation works is currently not enough to irrigate until the end of the crop. A representative of Phuc Yen Irrigation Company Limited said: From the beginning of November 2024 to mid-April 2025, there was almost no rain in Phuc Yen city, so some areas that depend on water for irrigation did not have enough water, while the water demand of crops increased according to the growth cycle.
The irrigation area by dams and reservoirs reviewed will have about 233 hectares of water shortage, the irrigation area by pumping stations managed by the company will have about 202 hectares of water shortage. The company has been implementing drought prevention solutions such as dredging Thanh Cao stream, building embankments to serve domestic water supply combined with creating water sources for lakes and dams; working with the Thanh Xuan valley project to supply additional water from reservoirs in the project. At the same time, installing field pumps, closing Cau Sat sluice to supply water to Ca Lo river, serving irrigation water for agricultural production areas managed by the company.
Currently, due to the impact of prolonged heat, the water level in reservoirs at some irrigation works in the area is low, the storage capacity and water resources in rivers, streams and dams are decreasing sharply.
Given the current shortage of water in reservoirs and rivers, coupled with prolonged hot and dry weather, if there continues to be little rain in the coming time, it will seriously affect crops, and there is a risk of widespread drought in mountainous communes and localities that depend on water from small lakes and dams.
Focusing on implementing measures to combat drought and minimize the damage caused by drought to agricultural production, right from the end of the winter crop, the Irrigation Sub-Department has advised the Department of Agriculture and Environment to issue a document directing the Irrigation One Member Co., Ltd. in the province to block drainage channels, streams, and sluices to store water, and completely block the main culverts of ponds and lakes to prevent water leakage and loss. Allow pumping stations along the river to pump stored water into ponds, lakes, and low-lying fields to store water for production when the crop begins.
Dredging canals, clearing channels, pumping station gates, ponds and lakes to ensure no water is lost during irrigation. Surveying and installing field pumping stations, purchasing and storing equipment and supplies for electric pumps, field oil pumps and digging pits to prevent drought at necessary locations...
