Keylor Navas is one of the best goalkeepers of his generation. |
The Keylor Navas move to Pumas UNAM shocked American football when the Costa Rican goalkeeper spent more than 400,000 USD (about 7.5 million Mexican pesos) to get permission from his home club Newell's Old Boys to move to Liga MX.
Upon receiving the offer from Pumas UNAM, Navas contacted Sergio Ramos, former Real Madrid centre-back who now plays for Monterrey in Liga MX, to learn about the Mexican football scene.
“Sergio told me about his experience in Mexico. I also knew that James (Rodríguez) was playing here at a high level,” Navas told ESPN . “The conversations with Sergio were part of the reason I decided to come to Mexico.”
Navas stressed: “I came here with the desire to contribute, push myself and compete at the highest level. I have the spirit to make history, to win titles.”
Pumas, seven-time Liga MX champions but without a title since 2011, are overhauling their squad to challenge for the title this season, having already signed midfielder Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff City.
Navas’ arrival is a major boost, with three Champions League wins and 114 caps for Costa Rica under his belt. Navas stressed that Liga MX is growing strongly, with the presence of stars such as James Rodríguez (Leon) and Sergio Ramos (Monterrey).
