Full charging may reduce battery life.
Overcharging an electric car battery is one of the biggest contributors to battery life loss. Lithium-ion batteries, the most common type of battery used in electric cars, perform best when maintained at a charge level of 20 to 80 percent. Overcharging can stress the battery, especially in harsh environmental conditions like high temperatures.
Dr Alan Green, a renewable energy expert at the University of Cambridge, said: "Continuously charging an electric car battery will reduce the battery's ability to store energy in the long term. To prolong battery life, users should try to keep the charge level below 100%, ideally between 80-90%."
Unlike the batteries in mobile devices, electric vehicle batteries need to be managed better to avoid "depletion" after a long period of use. Overcharging increases the oxidation process in the battery cells, leading to reduced performance and energy storage capacity.
Temperature and full charge affect performance
Another factor that electric vehicle users need to be aware of is the effect of temperature when fully charged. When a battery is fully charged, it tends to heat up, especially in high temperature environments. This high temperature can reduce the battery’s performance and lead to overheating, reducing the battery’s ability to maintain range.
“When a battery reaches 100%, it not only holds energy but also generates heat,” Dr. Green continued. “Continually charging at full capacity not only reduces performance but can also cause safety issues related to overheating.”
Full charging can also increase battery maintenance and replacement costs, as users will have to replace the battery with a new one when the performance of the old battery drops below an acceptable level.
Benefits of charging below 100%
Charging an electric car battery below 100% not only prolongs battery life, but also saves energy and reduces waste. In addition, charging between 80 - 90% also helps drivers better control battery performance on long trips.
Some electric car manufacturers have introduced an optimized charging feature that allows users to easily limit the battery charge level so that it does not reach 100%. This helps protect the battery and increase the vehicle's usable life.
