The information comes after Sam Altman hinted at other releases ahead of GPT-5.
Currently, OpenAI lacks a consumer-facing digital voice assistant. So, OpenAI recently filed a trademark application to build a digital voice assistant.
This suggests that the company is gearing up for a new product release. The move also suggests that Sam Altman may be looking to compete with Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa.
Sam Altman and OpenAI are about to launch a new product.
The filing was just filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The new information also comes a day after an interview with Sam Altman aired, in which he said that OpenAI has “a lot of other important things to release” before the GPT-5 platform is revealed.
Experts say the digital voice assistant may not come to fruition, as companies often file trademarks for ideas that never see the light of day. However, OpenAI is expected to release a “qualitatively better” ChatGPT upgrade by mid-year, as Business Insider previously reported.
In an interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, Altman said: “ We’re going to release a cool new model this year. I don’t know what we’re going to call it. We’re going to release a lot of different things in the coming months, I think they’re going to be really cool .”
He added: " I think before we talk about a GPT-5-like model that has been and is expected, I think we have a lot of other important things that need to be released first ."
OpenAI has also filed trademark applications for its future models, including GPT-6 and GPT-7, in October 2023. The trademark application details for GPT-6 include simulating conversations, sharing datasets for machine learning purposes, and predictive analytics. The trademark application details for GPT-7 include software that uses artificial intelligence to create music, convert text and data files into software code, and generate software code.
