According to Neowin , Samsung has increased its ownership in Rainbow Robotics, which is known for its HUBO product line, from 14.7% in 2023 to 35% in 2024, making the company a subsidiary in Samsung Electronics' financial statements. Samsung's goal is clear: becoming the largest shareholder will help them "accelerate the development of future robots, especially humanoid robots."
Many companies are focusing heavily on the field of humanoid robots.
Beyond developing robots for production lines, Samsung is also targeting the global market by looking to integrate Rainbow Robotics’ technology into its global operations. According to Samsung, they will use Rainbow Robotics’ collaborative robots, two-armed mobile robots, and autonomous mobile robots for manufacturing and logistics automation tasks. These robots are capable of improving work efficiency by learning and analyzing situational data and environmental changes thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. Rainbow Robotics also plans to expand into international markets through Samsung’s global sales infrastructure.
Samsung's 'forced' strategy
The move marks a major shift in Samsung’s robotics strategy. But it’s not the only company investing heavily in humanoid robots. Figure, a humanoid robot startup, has reportedly raised $500 million from giants like Microsoft and OpenAI, a testament to the growing interest in the field. Billionaire Elon Musk has also made no secret of his belief that Tesla’s humanoid robots could increase the company’s value by 43 times.
In addition to increasing its investment in Rainbow Robotics, Samsung has also established a Future Robotics Office that reports directly to the CEO. This office is tasked with promoting the development of advanced robots, especially humanoid robots, under the leadership of Dr. Jun-Ho Oh, one of the founders of Rainbow Robotics. This is considered a smart strategic move by Samsung in the context of increasingly fierce competition in the field of robots.
