Apple may remove voice assistant Siri in many countries

(Dan Tri) - Although Apple is somewhat slow in the artificial intelligence (AI) race, the company seems to be considering an important decision when allowing users to "retire" the Siri voice assistant.

Apple's popular virtual assistant Siri, which has been part of iPhone models for nearly 15 years, has faced constant criticism. This has sparked rumors that Apple is preparing to find an alternative to Siri.

In fact, Apple appears to be developing a system that would allow users to optionally replace Siri with a third-party voice assistant.

According to Bloomberg, this can be seen as a somewhat reserved admission that Apple is losing ground to the wave of ChatGPT and similar AI tools.

In a detailed analysis of Apple's AI strategy, journalist Mark Gurman (known for his reliable insider sources) explains that, in the European market, Apple is preparing to let users choose between Siri or third-party voice assistants.

This means that iPhone users in the "Old Continent" can use ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude instead of Siri.

Bloomberg said that Apple's move is to meet the requirements of antitrust laws in Europe, especially the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The law has forced Apple to make significant changes to the way the iPhone operates in the 27 EU member states, a change that will undoubtedly create strong competition for Siri in the minds of iPhone users.

In fact, Apple's voice assistant has proven to be less reliable and effective than its AI-powered competitors.

Some large language models have even begun to be used informally by users to replace Siri on the iPhone in handling everyday requests.

Allowing competitors to replace Siri on iPhones and iPads could render Apple's homegrown voice assistant obsolete.

Most modern chatbots are more efficient now, and if they were deeply integrated and had access to iPhone settings, many users would likely switch to them, meaning Siri would have to retire.

It seems that Apple is ready to de-prioritize Siri. Even if the company is indeed developing a completely new Siri based on a large language model, it seems to be doing so separately from the rest of the projects in Apple’s Intelligence rollout.
