Ukrainian military airport damaged after Russian airstrike

VnExpressVnExpress10/06/2023

Officials in the Poltava province of central Ukraine said that the Myrhorod military airport was attacked by Russia early this morning, causing damage to equipment and infrastructure.

"The enemy used eight cruise and ballistic missiles of the Iskander system and 35 Shahed-136/131 suicide unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to attack one of the military airports in Poltava province, as well as areas in the Kharkov region in the north and Odessa in the south," the Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement today.

The Ukrainian military said air defense units shot down two unidentified missiles and 20 Shahed aircraft.

Poltava Governor Dmytro Lunin later said that the airstrike on the Myrhorod military airport had “caused some damage to infrastructure and equipment,” but did not provide specifics. The Myrhorod base is home to Ukraine’s 831st and 39th Tactical Aviation Brigades, which were equipped with nearly 40 Su-27 heavy fighters before the fighting began.

The spokeswoman for the Ukrainian military's Southern Operations Command, Natalia Humeniuk, said on the same day that debris from one of the intercepted UAVs fell on an apartment building in Odessa region and caused a fire. Emergency services in the city of Odessa reported that three civilians were killed and 27 injured in the incident.

Kharkiv Governor Oleh Synehubov said 10 Russian suicide drones targeted two areas in the region, killing one person. Serhiy Lysak, governor of the central Dnipro province, said two Russian drones were shot down and did not cause any damage.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the information.

Ukrainian officials admitting that military targets were attacked is considered an unusual move, as the country’s officials almost never publicly disclose information about military facilities hit by Russian attacks. The office of the governor of Khmelnitsky Oblast in western Ukraine said late last month that multiple military targets had been hit by Russia, damaging five aircraft and a runway.

The airstrikes came as the Ukrainian army launched large-scale counter-offensives in Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk provinces.

The repeated Russian attacks appear to be aimed at depleting Ukraine’s air defense ammunition, as it has to fire expensive shells against cheap missiles and drones. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly expressed concern to the West about the risk of running out of air defense missiles before the counterattack.

Deputy Director of the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Directorate Vadym Skibitsky said last month that Russia was focusing on attacking strongholds and ammunition depots to disrupt the counterattack, instead of trying to destroy energy infrastructure as before.
