On June 5, Cam My District Medical Center (Dong Nai) announced that it had just received a woman who gave birth "naturally" at home, without cutting the umbilical cord and soaking the placenta in coarse salt for many hours.
Specifically, on June 2, a 35-year-old woman (living in Bien Hoa City) was brought to Cam My District Medical Center by her family in a state of having just given birth about 10 hours ago.
The baby boy weighed 3.3kg but surprisingly, the umbilical cord was still intact and the placenta was soaked in a basin of coarse salt.
Despite repeated attempts by medical staff to persuade her, the pregnant woman refused to allow the newborn baby boy to be examined and cared for.
Worried about the health of the mother and child, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Ha - Deputy Director of Cam My District Medical Center - directly met and talked with the mother and her family.
After about 20 minutes of persuasion, explaining the risks of complications, knowledge about mother and baby... the mother agreed to cut the umbilical cord, clean and examine the baby boy.
According to Dr. Ha, the mother is a master, lives in Bien Hoa city but her biological mother lives in Cam My district. This is the mother's fourth birth. The first two were in the hospital, the third was at home.
"The woman gave birth naturally following a certain trend, insisting on using salt to marinate the placenta. Seeing this, her family advised her to go to the hospital but she was not allowed to do so. After much persuasion, they finally managed to cut the umbilical cord," Dr. Ha shared.
The center then reported to the local health station, but they still could not resolve the issue. Even though the baby boy was breathing rapidly, wheezing, and showing signs of pneumonia, the mother did not give him antibiotics, refused to be hospitalized, and insisted on taking the baby home.
According to Dr. Ha, a multi-partum mother, giving birth at home carries the risk of postpartum infection, cervical and vaginal tears, and especially postpartum hemorrhage. Children are susceptible to umbilical infections, pneumonia, and sepsis. In addition, unvaccinated newborns are susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis B.
Natural childbirth is dangerous for both mother and child.
Doctor Ha recommends against giving birth at home on the basis of "natural birth" when there are no safe medical conditions. Because any complications that occur can lead to unfortunate consequences for both mother and newborn.
"Currently, with modern medicine, natural birth is no longer suitable. Pregnant women should go to a medical facility to be examined, screened and give birth in the safest way," said Dr. Ha.
