Chile has missed out on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. |
This result leaves Chile at the bottom of the table in the South American qualifying race. Meanwhile, Bolivia keeps alive its hopes of securing a spot in the intercontinental playoff for a chance to participate in the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Chile's golden generation of football won two Copa America titles in 2015 and 2016. But apart from Alexis Sanchez, Chile's starting lineup against Bolivia consisted mostly of less well-known players. Key figures like Arturo Vidal, Eduardo Vargas, and Mauricio Isla were all absent.
Sanchez couldn't hide his disappointment after the match. He shared: “It's sad, I feel terrible. I've never experienced anything like this. We have to apologize to the fans. The whole team needs to keep working. The golden generation has ended, now I'm the only one left.”
Bolivia opened the scoring in the 5th minute through Miguel Terceros. In the 90th minute, they sealed the 2-0 victory with a goal from Enzo Monteiro. Chile faced considerable difficulties playing away at El Alto, located at an altitude of 4,150 meters above sea level.
With this victory, Bolivia now has 17 points, putting pressure on Venezuela, who currently have 18 points and will play later in Uruguay. Both teams are competing for 7th place, which would provide a chance to participate in the intercontinental playoff. Colombia, currently in 6th place, has 21 points.
