On April 16, at the Conference of the Executive Committee of the Quang Ngai Provincial Party Committee, delegates voted to approve the reorganization of Ly Son island district into a commune-level administrative unit called Ly Son special zone.
In addition to Ly Son special zone, Quang Ngai province also reorganized commune-level administrative units, reorganizing 169/170 communes, wards, and towns of 12 districts, towns, and cities into 54 new communes and wards. No reorganization was carried out for 1 administrative unit (meeting standards on natural area and population size).
Thus, after the arrangement, Quang Ngai province has 56 commune-level administrative units (including 49 communes, 6 wards and 1 special zone).
Specifically, Quang Ngai city has 3 wards and 2 communes; Duc Pho town has 3 wards and 2 communes; districts: Binh Son 5 communes; Son Tinh 4 communes; Nghia Hanh 4 communes; Son Tay 3 communes; Minh Long 2 communes; Mo Duc 4 communes; Tu Nghia 4 communes; Tra Bong 6 communes; Son Ha 5 communes; Ba To 8 communes and Ly Son special zone.

Ly Son district is located in the northeast of Quang Ngai province, about 15 nautical miles from the mainland, with an area of about 10.39km² and a population of over 22,000 people.
Ly Son district was established on January 1, 1993 under Decision No. 337 dated September 21, 1992 of the Council of Ministers (now the Government), on the basis of the total area and population of Binh Vinh and Binh Yen communes of Binh Son district.
These two communes were later renamed Ly Vinh and Ly Hai communes.
In 2003, An Binh commune (Be island) was established with a natural area of 69 hectares and 398 people, on the basis of separation from Ly Vinh commune. At the same time, Ly Vinh commune and Ly Hai commune were renamed An Hai commune and An Vinh commune.
In 2014, Ly Son officially connected to the national grid, with submarine cables across the sea.
In 2020, the National Assembly Standing Committee issued Resolution 867, dissolving the governments of three communes: An Vinh, An Hai, and An Binh. Ly Son became a district without commune level.
Ly Son, with its important role in national security and defense and its great potential for tourism development, Resolution No. 26-NQ/TW of the Politburo determined to develop Ly Son island district into a center of sea and island tourism. This is the premise and foundation for Ly Son island district to continue to develop its socio-economy, ensuring security and national defense.
