Director Hoang Nam said the work was inspired by a famous photo taken by war correspondent Ronald Haeberle on March 16, 1968 - the exact time the My Lai massacre took place.
Among the approximately 60 photos he took with two cameras, there was one special photo capturing the moment a little boy was hugging a smaller baby to protect him, on the edge of a rice field.
The photo "A boy tries to shield his sister from a bullet" (formerly known as "Brother shields his sister from a bullet") - not only recorded a historical moment, but also became a symbol denouncing America's war crimes.
It was widely published in American and international newspapers after the truth about My Lai was revealed. The photo contributed to changing the American public's perception of the war in Vietnam, shocking American public opinion and contributing to a series of anti-war protests in this country.
Director Hoang Nam said he was deeply moved when he saw this photo, and from there he wanted to make a story about a slice of war. Set in Quang Ngai in 1968, "My Lai Baby" will revolve around the life and death journey of a boy who witnessed his family and beloved village engulfed in the flames of war.
The film is inspired by the My Lai incident, delving into the human condition as well as passionate patriotism in a tragic scene. "The film will be an emotional journey of the two main characters' brothers with the desire to keep what is familiar to them," he said.
Hoang Nam informed that the film not only recreates historical events, but also speaks for children who were deprived of their childhood, family and homeland during the war. Although small and weak, they still have the desire to protect their loved ones and their home. But the unjust war does not give them any chance to grow up. He wants the film to convey a strong message of love for peace from Vietnam to the world.
Currently, the project is in the script development and location survey phase in Quang Ngai. Director Hoang Nam is also looking for actors suitable for the story.
Director Hoang Nam was successful with his debut work "Den am hon", earning over 105 billion VND. He is also famous for his YouTube channel "Challenge Me - Let's challenge me", with over 4 million followers, specializing in exploring mysterious places in Vietnam as well as around the world .
