Wrestling is considered a "gold mine" for the Vietnamese sports delegation, because it is the event that brought the most gold medals to the Vietnamese sports delegation at the two most recent SEA Games. At the 31st SEA Games, the wrestling team won 17/18 gold medals, then won 13/18 gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games. The Vietnamese wrestling team continued to affirm its position as the number one in Southeast Asia with 24 gold medals and won the overall title at the 2025 Southeast Asian Wrestling Championship held in Singapore in May. At the 33rd SEA Games, wrestling was reduced to 12 events, including 4 men's freestyle, 4 women's freestyle and 4 men's classical; in addition to the regulation that each country can only register 1 athlete in 1 event. In addition, many countries also implemented a naturalization policy to compete with the Vietnamese team. In the real context, the target that Vietnamese wrestlers set for their participation in this congress was only 5-6 gold medals. Facing many difficulties, coach Tran Van Son affirmed that pressure and challenges are part of sports, and emphasized the determination of Vietnamese wrestling to maintain achievements and affirm its leading position in Southeast Asia.
Currently, the Vietnamese wrestling team is in a period of intense training to best prepare for the 33rd SEA Games.
Since August, the team has also had the support of American coach Bill Sullivan, helping the players improve their tactics, fitness and modern playing skills. In-depth investment, a careful and methodical approach, a combination of experience, professional strategies and increased internationalization are the foundations for Vietnamese materials to improve their competitiveness and maintain their inherent position. Another positive sign is that the key members of the team have maintained their form, competing successfully at the recent 2025 National Wrestling Championship. In addition to technical factors, athletes also ensure psychological factors, competitive spirit and tactical coordination ability. The three sisters Nguyen Thi My Trang, My Hanh, My Linh are also the three gold medal hopes of the Vietnamese wrestling team. The first two names have both won the last two SEA Games.
These days, the atmosphere of the wrestling competition at the National High-Level Athlete Training Center is extremely exciting, with athletes enthusiastically practicing. All strive to hone their skills, overcome their weaknesses and develop their strengths. At the 33rd SEA Games, the Vietnamese wrestling team will compete from December 17 to 19, right before the end of the tournament. With high determination and careful preparation, the Vietnamese wrestling team is ready to create new miracles, contributing to the success of the Vietnamese sports delegation.
