Review of the movie Kraven the Hunter

The film's plot is too predictable and simplistic.

Kraven the Hunter' Review: Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Marvel Origin Tale

"Kraven the Hunter" tells the story of Sergei Kravinoff, a skilled hunter who harbors a burning desire to be the best in the world . He grew up under the oppressive control of his tyrannical father, Nikolai Kravinoff, which shaped his fierce personality and thirst for revenge. After a life-changing event, Kraven discovers his extraordinary ability: to connect with and control animals. With this power, where will he go? Will he become a hero protecting nature, or the most ruthless predator?

Although the plot of "Kraven the Hunter" is quite simple, the film lacks unexpected twists. The ending is also predictable, and at times, unnecessary dialogue in the first half makes the pace slow and unengaging.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson's performance carries the entire film.

Kraven the Hunter' review: Radical rebranding of Spider-Man villain is horrendous yet hilarious | Mashable

Aaron Taylor-Johnson delivered an outstanding performance as Sergei/Kraven, from his appearance to his impressive action sequences. With his muscular physique and captivating looks, he perfectly embodied the image of a superhero like Kraven. Aaron carried the team by showcasing the character's ruthlessness and strength, but also his rebellious streak, creating a Kraven who was both fierce and compelling. Russell Crowe, as the father Nikolai, also left a strong impression with his cold, ruthless expressions, making his character both terrifying and profound.

However, some of the supporting actors failed to fit in with the story. Specifically, Ariana DeBose's performance as Calypso was unconvincing; her acting was stiff and lacked emotion, failing to connect with the main character. In fact, her character seemed to contribute little to the plot, and her appearance only disrupted the film's flow.

Featuring spectacular action scenes.

Kraven the Hunter' review: Radical rebranding of Spider-Man villain is horrendous yet hilarious | Mashable

One of Kraven the Hunter's biggest highlights is its action sequences. The film delivers many dramatic, bloody, and violent fight scenes that are true to the T18 standard, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. The action scenes are impressively executed, providing a visually stunning and thrilling experience.

However, the film's special effects weren't particularly impressive. The CGI in some scenes lacked smoothness and felt rather awkward. For example, the scenes of rocks falling from above or wild animals running around the convoy at the end of the film looked quite artificial. In fact, Kraven's special effects were somewhat inferior to those of other superhero films.

Summary of the movie Kraven the Hunter

In summary, Kraven the Hunter is a decent, entertaining action film, ideal for those who enjoy superhero movies and intense violence. The film stands out with its impressive action sequences and solid performance by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. However, the plot lacks originality, some supporting actors fail to deliver compelling performances, and the special effects aren't particularly impressive.

Kraven the Hunter is like a quick, entertaining "fast food" movie, lacking the distinctive elements to make a lasting impression on viewers.

Cast of Kraven the Hunter

Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Sergei Kravinoff, also known as Kraven The Hunter.

Kraven the Hunter: The Entire Cast of Sony's Spider-Man Spinoff Movie (So Far) - IGN

Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars in Kraven the Hunter, taking on the legendary villain from Spider-Man. Kraven, who first appeared in 1964, just two years after Spider-Man's debut, is one of the most formidable enemies in the Marvel universe. He is also a founding member of the Sinister Six, a notorious group of villains including Doctor Octopus, Electro, Vulture, Sandman, and Mysterio. The film will explore Sergei Kravinoff's past, from his childhood to his transformation into Kraven the Hunter, and explain how he acquired his fearsome powers, although these powers differ from the original comic book versions.

Kraven the Hunter isn't Taylor-Johnson's first foray into the superhero universe. He previously played Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver) in MCU's Avengers: Age of Ultron, although the character met a tragic end in that film. Before joining the superhero universe, Taylor-Johnson was known for his roles in Kick-Ass and its sequel, as well as films like Nowhere Boy, Anna Karenina, Godzilla, Nocturnal Animals, and Bullet Train. It's currently unclear how Kraven the Hunter will connect to the rest of the Sony Spider-Man universe, but there are reports that Taylor-Johnson has signed on to continue appearing in future superhero projects.

Russell Crowe plays Nikolai Kravinoff, Kraven's father.

Russell Crowe considers retiring from acting: 'You'll never hear from me again' | News

Russell Crowe joins the cast of Kraven the Hunter as Nikolai Kravinoff, Kraven's ruthless father. In the film's trailer, Kravinoff is seen training his son to become a great hunter, but his methods are also very strict. Crowe is an excellent addition to the cast, widely known for his role as General Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator, the Oscar-winning film, along with impressive performances in A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, and Les Misérables. Similar to Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Crowe also has experience in superhero films, playing Jor-El in Man of Steel (2013) and Zeus in Thor: Love & Thunder (2022).

Ariana DeBose plays Calypso

After a tense casting process, Ariana DeBose was chosen to play Calypso in Kraven the Hunter in March 2022. In the film, Calypso is not only a priestess but also Kraven's love interest. In the Marvel comics, Calypso Elizi is notable for her ability to manipulate Spider-Man's villains, including Kraven and Lizard, to pit them against heroes like Daredevil and Spider-Man. With her dark magic capable of mind control, resurrection, and zombie creation, Calypso becomes an extremely dangerous character and a formidable addition to Kraven's team.

Ariana DeBose is widely known for her role in West Side Story (2021), a film that earned her a prestigious Oscar. She has also appeared in notable projects such as Hamilton, Westworld, and The Prom.

Fred Hechinger plays Dmitri Smerdykov, also known as the Chameleon.

Dmitri Smerdyakov, also known as Chameleon, was one of Spider-Man's first villains in Marvel Comics, first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 1963. He was Kraven the Hunter's half-brother. Chameleon was a master of disguise, capable of impersonating various characters, which made Kraven obsessed with Spider-Man, leading to a long-standing rivalry between the two brothers and Peter Parker.

In the trailers for Kraven the Hunter, we haven't seen Chameleon clearly demonstrate this special ability, leaving viewers curious about how the character will be portrayed in the film. Will Chameleon become a prominent villain, or will his role be mentioned indirectly, since Spider-Man, Kraven's arch-nemesis, seems to be absent from the movie? Either way, it will be interesting to see how the film explores this character, as Chameleon has never appeared in a Marvel action film before.

Fred Hechinger, after making his debut in Eighth Grade in 2018, has impressed with roles in News of the World, the Fear Street series, The Woman in the Window, and as Quinn Mossbacher in The White Lotus. His roles have helped him develop a diverse range of emotions, laying a solid foundation for his transition into the superhero genre, especially with the potential of Dmitri Smerdyakov.

Christopher Abbott plays the role of the Foreigner.

Christopher Abbott takes on the role of the main villain in Kraven the Hunter, playing Foreigner. First appearing in Marvel comics in 1986 in The Spectacular Spider-Man #116, Foreigner has interacted with famous characters such as Spider-Man, Chameleon, Silver Sable, and Black Cat. While little has been revealed about Foreigner's role in the film, we know that he will be the primary antagonist, and Sony seems to be keeping details about this role under wraps until now.

Abbott, a familiar face on screen, began his acting career in Martha Marcy May Marlene in 2011, and since then he has continued to showcase his talent through films such as A Most Violent Year, James White, It Comes at Night, and the Catch-22 series.

Alessandro Nivola plays Aleksei Sytsevich, aka Rhino

Alessandro Nivola, although cast in March 2022, officially confirmed his role as Rhino in Kraven the Hunter in April 2023. Rhino is one of Spider-Man's most prominent villains, originally a Russian thug who, after undergoing an experiment, acquires synthetic rhinoceros skin and superhuman strength. While the character was portrayed by Paul Giamatti in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Nivola's version in this film will be more faithful to the comic book depiction and also based on real-world elements.

Review of the content of the movie Kraven the Hunter

Kraven the Hunter is a dramatic and compelling story about the rise of one of the most famous villains in the Marvel universe – Spider-Man's arch-nemesis. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven, a man haunted by a traumatic past under the control of his brutal mafia father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe). It is this obsession with revenge from his father that drives Kraven down the path to becoming a legendary hunter, but also transforms him into one of the most terrifying characters.
