Kraven the Hunter Movie Review
The movie's plot is too predictable and simple.
"Kraven the Hunter" tells the story of Sergei Kravinoff, an excellent hunter who has always had a burning desire to become the best in the world . He grew up under the control of his domineering father, Nikolai Kravinoff, which shaped his fierce personality and thirst for revenge. After a life-changing event, Kraven discovers his magical ability: to connect with and control animals. Where will he go with this power? Will he be a hero to protect nature, or will he become the most brutal predator?
While the plot of "Kraven the Hunter" is fairly straightforward, it lacks any surprising twists. The ending is predictable, and the sometimes unnecessary dialogue in the first half of the film makes the pace slow and unengaging.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson's performance carries the movie
Aaron Taylor-Johnson did an excellent job as Sergei/Kraven, from his appearance to his impressive action scenes. With his muscular physique and charismatic appearance, he really fits the image of a superhero like Kraven. Aaron "carried the team" by showing the character's ruthlessness and strength, but also his arrogance, creating a Kraven that is both fierce and attractive. Russell Crowe as the father Nikolai also left a strong impression with his cold, cruel expression, making his character scary and profound.
However, some of the supporting actors did not fit the story. Specifically, Ariana DeBose as Calypso did not really give a convincing performance, her acting was somewhat stiff and lacked emotion, not creating a connection with the main character. In fact, her character did not seem to contribute much to the plot, and her appearance only interrupted the flow of the film.
Invested in eye-catching action scenes
One of the biggest highlights of Kraven the Hunter is the action scenes. The film offers many dramatic, bloody and violent fighting scenes that are T18 standard, making viewers excited. The action scenes are very impressive, bringing a satisfying and dramatic experience.
However, the film's special effects are not really impressive. The CGI in some scenes is not smooth and quite awkward. For example, the scene of rocks falling from above or the scene of wild animals running around the convoy at the end of the film looks quite fake. In fact, Kraven's special effects are somewhat inferior to other superhero movies.
Kraven the Hunter Movie Review
In conclusion, Kraven the Hunter is a pretty entertaining action movie, ideal for those who love superheroes and dramatic violence. The movie stands out with impressive action scenes and a solid performance by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. However, the plot lacks originality, some supporting actors fail to show their charisma, and the special effects are not really impressive.
Kraven the Hunter is like a fast food entertainment, lacking the special elements to make viewers remember it forever.

Kraven the Hunter Movie Cast
Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Sergei Kravinoff, also known as Kraven The Hunter
Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars in Kraven the Hunter, taking on the iconic Spider-Man villain. Kraven, who first appeared in 1964, just two years after Spider-Man debuted, is one of the most formidable foes in the Marvel Universe. He is also a founding member of the Sinister Six, the infamous villain team that includes Doctor Octopus, Electro, Vulture, Sandman, and Mysterio. The film will explore Sergei Kravinoff's backstory, from his childhood to his transformation into Kraven the Hunter, and explain how he gained his terrifying powers, although they are different from his comic book origins.
Kraven the Hunter isn't Taylor-Johnson's first foray into the superhero film world. He previously played Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver) in the MCU's Avengers: Age of Ultron, though the character met a tragic end in that film. Prior to joining the superhero universe, Taylor-Johnson was notable for his roles in Kick-Ass and its sequel, along with films like Nowhere Boy, Anna Karenina, Godzilla, Nocturnal Animals, and Bullet Train. It's unclear how Kraven the Hunter will connect to the rest of Sony's Spider-Man universe, but Taylor-Johnson has reportedly signed on to appear in future superhero projects.
Russell Crowe plays Nikolai Kravinoff, Kraven's father
Russell Crowe joins the cast of Kraven the Hunter as Nikolai Kravinoff, Kraven's ruthless father. In the film's trailer, Kravinoff is seen training his son to become a great hunter, but his methods are also strict. Crowe is an excellent addition to the cast, widely known for his role as General Maximus Decimus Meridius in the Oscar-winning Gladiator, along with impressive roles in A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, and Les Misérables. Like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Crowe also has experience in superhero films, having played Jor-El in Man of Steel (2013) and Zeus in Thor: Love & Thunder (2022).
Ariana DeBose plays Calypso
After a grueling audition, Ariana DeBose was chosen to play Calypso in Kraven the Hunter in March 2022. In the film, Calypso is not only a priestess but also Kraven's love interest. In the Marvel comics, Calypso Elizi is known for her ability to manipulate Spider-Man villains, including Kraven and the Lizard, to confront heroes like Daredevil and Spider-Man. With dark magic that can control minds, reanimate, and create zombies, Calypso becomes an extremely dangerous character and a formidable addition to Kraven's team.
Ariana DeBose is widely known for her role in West Side Story (2021), which earned her an Oscar. She has also appeared in notable projects such as Hamilton, Westworld, and The Prom.
Fred Hechinger plays Dmitri Smerdykov, aka the Chameleon
Dmitri Smerdyakov, also known as Chameleon, is one of the first Spider-Man villains in Marvel Comics, first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 1963. He is the half-brother of Kraven the Hunter. Chameleon is a master of disguise, with the ability to mimic different characters, which led to Kraven's obsession with Spider-Man, leading to a long-standing rivalry between the two brothers and Peter Parker.
In the trailers for Kraven the Hunter, we haven't seen Chameleon demonstrate this special ability, leaving viewers curious as to how the character will be portrayed in the film. Will Chameleon become a prominent villain or will his role be hinted at indirectly, as it seems that Spider-Man, Kraven's arch-nemesis, will be absent from the film. Either way, it will be interesting to see how the film explores the character, as Chameleon has never appeared in a live-action Marvel film.
Fred Hechinger, who made his debut in 2018's Eighth Grade, has since gone on to make an impression with roles in News of the World, the Fear Street series, The Woman in the Window, and as Quinn Mossbacher in The White Lotus. His roles have allowed him to develop a wide emotional range, laying a solid foundation for his transition into the superhero genre, especially with the potential of Dmitri Smerdyakov.
Christopher Abbott as The Foreigner
Christopher Abbott takes on the main villain role in Kraven the Hunter, as Foreigner. First appearing in Marvel Comics in 1986's The Spectacular Spider-Man #116, Foreigner has crossed paths with popular characters like Spider-Man, Chameleon, Silver Sable, and Black Cat. While little is known about Foreigner's role in the film, we do know that he will be the main villain, and Sony appears to be keeping details about his role under wraps for now.
Abbott, a familiar face on screen, began his acting career in Martha Marcy May Marlene in 2011, and has since continued to establish himself through films such as A Most Violent Year, James White, It Comes at Night, along with the Catch-22 series.
Alessandro Nivola plays Aleksei Sytsevich, aka Rhino
Alessandro Nivola, although cast in March 2022, was officially confirmed as Rhino in Kraven the Hunter in April 2023. Rhino is one of Spider-Man's most prominent villains, originally a Russian thug who, after undergoing an experiment, gained synthetic rhino skin and superhuman strength. The character was portrayed by Paul Giamatti in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but the version Nivola will portray in this film will be more faithful to the comic book image, while also being based on real-life elements.
Review of the movie Kraven the Hunter
Kraven the Hunter is a dramatic and powerful story that tells the story of one of the most famous villains in the Marvel Universe – Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven, a man haunted by a traumatic past under the control of his brutal mafia father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe). It is his father’s obsession with revenge that sets Kraven on the path to becoming a legendary hunter, but also one of the most terrifying characters.
