On the morning of March 16, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health Tang Chi Thuong said that the department had just organized a workshop to update scientific evidence on the indications for blood filtration and plasma filtration in the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia and lipid disorders.

The workshop was organized by the department in the context of recent advertisements appearing online claiming that blood filtration and plasma filtration help prevent diseases related to blood fat, stroke or eliminate toxins in healthy people. Even a facility in District 7 (HCMC) advertised: "Blood purification - purify the body and increase health to prevent cancer and disease".

The Department has invited leading experts in the fields of blood filtration, nephrology, and intensive care in the city, along with representatives of several private general hospitals approved by the Ministry of Health to deploy blood filtration and plasma filtration techniques to discuss the above issue.

At the workshop, experts agreed that plasma exchange treatment should continue to be performed according to the recommendations of the American Society of Hemodialysis - ASFA (2023).

The expansion of indications requires additional legal basis, medical evidence and consensus from competent authorities.

Experts confirm that there is not enough medical evidence or legal basis to apply blood filtration to prevent diseases related to blood fat, stroke or remove toxins in healthy people. Therefore, more valuable clinical studies are needed to more accurately evaluate the effectiveness and safety of this technique for other diseases.

Based on expert opinions, the workshop reached a consensus: the indications for blood filtration and plasma filtration must strictly follow the guidelines of the Ministry of Health.

Specifically, medical facilities must comply with the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment, Decree No. 96/2023 of the Government and legal regulations during their operations, especially properly implementing regulations on advertising in the medical field.

At the same time, strictly comply with the diagnostic and treatment guidelines and technical procedures issued by the Ministry of Health, including the prescription of blood filtration and plasma filtration methods to treat patients.

The application of new techniques, new methods, new medical equipment or clinical trials must ensure the conditions and procedures prescribed by law.

The Department of Health requires the Drug and Treatment Councils of public and non-public hospitals to strengthen the review and inspection of compliance with technical indications for blood filtration and plasma filtration in patient treatment and compliance with legal regulations in medical examination and treatment at medical facilities.

Correcting the advertisement "blood filtration to prevent stroke"

Previously, on March 4, Mr. Ha Anh Duc - Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management - signed and issued a document to rectify advertising activities on medical examination and treatment.

The Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management has requested provincial and municipal health departments to rectify advertising activities for medical examination and treatment facilities. These include advertisements about "high-tech blood filtration techniques to remove blood fat and reduce the risk of stroke".
