According to an update from the Vietnam Tennis Federation, the men's singles event of the 2025 National Men's and Women's Tennis Championship witnessed a big shock with a 13-year-old player defeating a 24-year-old senior.
Specifically, 13-year-old tennis player Le Phu Gia (born in 2012, Ho Chi Minh City) unexpectedly defeated senior Nguyen Van Phuong (2001) with a score of 2-1 (6-4, 2-6, 6-4). Van Phuong is the second seed of the tournament and a pillar of the Vietnam Davis Cup team at the recent Davis Cup Group III, as he was one of the two doubles players who helped Vietnam stay in the rankings.
This victory is considered one of the most shocking results of Vietnamese tennis in many years.
In this match, Phu Gia played with great confidence, taking advantage of opportunities to create a turning point, while his senior Van Phuong had a day of poor performance, continuously making mistakes and not being able to maintain his feeling for the ball. In the decisive third set, his physical limitations made Van Phuong even more out of breath, creating conditions for the young player from Ho Chi Minh City to complete a historic victory, creating a shock in the tournament.
This victory helped 13-year-old player Phu Gia advance to round 3 of the tournament and meet 9th seed Dinh Cong Hau.
This tournament is taking place at the Tennis Court Complex of the Community Sports Center in Binh Duong Ward, Ho Chi Minh City from August 14 to August 20.
