The core cultural values of the nation are facing many challenges from the wave of integration and the "tornado" of technology 4.0. In that process, how will the preservation be and where is the living space for those precious values?

Convergence of human values

The “thread” that connects the people of the Central Highlands is community culture. Of course, this “thread” that connects the community is not easy to obtain, but is accumulated and cultivated over many generations, creating the unique identity of our people.

Traditional festivals, where humanistic and good values in the social life of ethnic groups converge, in which the most typical value is community cohesion, making human relationships stronger. Currently, many villages still preserve many traditional festivals. And it is in these places that cultural preservation has achieved many positive results. The new rice festival of the Xe Dang people held on January 1 every year in H'ring village (Ea H'ding commune, Cu M'gar district) is the most vivid proof.

Xe Dang people in Cu M'gar district dance xoang during the new rice festival.

Every time a festival is organized and held, each villager becomes "multi-talented". Before the big festival, villagers prepare supplies, food, food, decorate the ceremony area... Men are responsible for heavy work such as cutting bamboo, chopping firewood, while women take care of the kitchen and decoration. On the opening day of the festival, everyone contributes whatever they have, each family contributes a chicken, a kilo of pork, a few kilos of sticky rice, and a jar of rice wine. After the ritual part, everyone eagerly enters the festival part. They display food and drinks that were prepared in advance to eat, sing, and dance together... When they are a little tipsy from the rice wine, they dance, sing, and play gongs... Everything happens naturally, without formality or ostentation, nor is it "reenacting" a certain ritual, but is just innocent, passionately devoted to adding identity to the cultural capital of the village. That is a manifestation of the community spirit, and also the greatest value that the festival brings.

Mr. Y Wem H'wing, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cu M'gar district, shared that there is no better way to preserve culture than to rely on the community itself to preserve and promote it. The local government does not intervene deeply but only supports funding, security, logistics... the rest is left for the people to authentically recreate their traditional festivals. When the subject of festival culture is promoted to the fullest, it is also an opportunity for the community to participate and sympathize. Thanks to regular organization, many traditional festivals are known to tourists and are attracted by the experience of the festival performed by the people themselves.

Multiplying cultural values

Dak Lak is a convergence of 49 ethnic groups living together, with a diverse and colorful culture. Dak Lak province identifies the work of preserving, conserving and promoting ethnic cultural identity as a key task in the local cultural development strategy, in which ethnic minorities are the center and the subject of all activities. In an effort to preserve, conserve and promote ethnic cultural identity, from 2016 to present, the local cultural sector has coordinated to organize more than 130 rituals, festivals and traditional festivals of ethnic minorities associated with gongs.

However, in the context of increasingly deep international integration, expanding cultural exchange, especially the impact of foreign factors, cultural preservation faces many greater challenges. That is the risk of traditional values fading away, dissolving before the new integration trend.

The practice of cultural preservation in the locality shows that in order to preserve and promote cultural identity and traditional beauty of the nation in a sustainable way, it is necessary to rely on the community. There is no better effort than to actually involve the people in the preservation process, to arouse the awareness of the people involved. Without the participation of the people - the most important subject - in protection and preservation, it is difficult for any cultural value to be preserved. They are the subjects who strongly depict historical imprints, strongly express the cultural values of their nation and are also the beneficiaries of culture. They preserve, promote, arouse the potential inner strength and "extend" the solidarity thread in the village. At the same time, they evoke many good emotions for those who participate.

The province's goal is to preserve, conserve and promote the cultural identity of ethnic groups better and better. To do so, there needs to be a space for that connection to be stronger, bringing about empathy in the community. Traditional festivals that are still preserved are the places that create a space for practicing the culture of the ethnic group. Or in other words, the entire system of traditional cultural values is created, promoted, enjoyed and transmitted in that space. Because traditional festivals are the most vivid and complete space that gathers cultural and spiritual elements containing the values of an ethnic group. That is where many core elements converge to be able to identify the identity of each ethnic group, including customs, practices, beliefs, music , dances, costumes, cuisine... Festivals are an opportunity to honor these cultural values.

Life is always changing, even too fast and complicated, what is old will be difficult to preserve if not "recalled" in a lively and "soulful" way like that. When there is no longer a space for practice, precious cultural values will be difficult to preserve and promote. Therefore, if the community element is nurtured and promoted, it will be a strong "root" for the original nuances to be preserved, "rooted" in modern life.
