Early consolidation of N2 canal

N2 Canal is currently an important irrigation water supply route serving agricultural production and supplying raw water to Dong May Water Plant, supplying domestic water to Dong Mai and Vang Danh wards... However, due to being built in the form of an open canal, passing through a densely populated area and being degraded, this canal is potentially at risk of insecurity and water pollution, and needs to be upgraded and solidified soon.

Children playing near open canals pose a potential safety risk.

The N2 canal is about 13km long, carrying water from Yen Lap dam through Dong Mai ward, Vang Danh ward to the reservoir of Dong May water plant managed by Uong Bi water enterprise. Due to being built with a low structure and being used for a long time, many sections of the canal have seriously degraded, the bottom and walls of the canal are weak, some sections are still earthen ditches, not solidly reinforced.

In fact, the current status of the N2 canal is fraught with potential risks of insecurity and water pollution. In many areas where the canal passes through, people still regularly use it to wash agricultural tools, including pesticide bottles. There are many cases where people throw dead animals directly into the canal, seriously affecting environmental sanitation and the quality of raw water brought to the factory.

People take water from the canal for irrigation.

Another risk is that the canal is about 1 meter lower than the road surface, posing a danger to people, especially children. Mr. Bui Dac Vu (Trung Vuong 2 area, Vang Danh ward) said: Because it is an open canal, this area is densely populated, many children often play near the canal, which is very dangerous. There have been cases of children falling into the canal, fortunately they were rescued in time. We have repeatedly made recommendations to the People's Councils at all levels about this issue, but it has not been resolved. We hope that the authorities will pay attention to sealing the canal soon to both protect the water source and ensure the safety of the people.

In addition, due to its open design and lower than the general level, after each heavy rain or storm, the N2 canal is often flooded with mud and surface water, reducing the quality of the water source. There have been incidents that caused the water supply of Uong Bi City (old) to be interrupted, which poses a major challenge in ensuring water security if there is no thorough and long-term solution.

To proactively respond and improve the situation, Quang Ninh Clean Water Joint Stock Company has invested in the construction and put into operation Dong May Water Plant with a tank capacity of over 60,000m³ and a water filtration system with a capacity of 14 million m³/day and night. Uong Bi Water Enterprise has also actively coordinated with the raw water supplier to ensure the smooth operation of the N2 canal. However, given the current open and degraded canal situation, operation still faces many difficulties, affecting the long-term efficiency of water supply.

The open canal is lower than the road surface, posing a potential risk of insecurity and water pollution.

In response to the people's feedback and recommendations, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has conducted a survey of the N2 canal. The results have been included in the list of proposed public investment projects for the 2026-2030 period, sent to the Department of Finance for synthesis and reporting to the Provincial People's Committee for consideration according to the Project to ensure water security in the province until 2025, with a vision to 2030.

The investment in upgrading and solidifying the N2 canal is not only meaningful in improving the quality of water sources, ensuring stable supply capacity for Dong May Water Plant, but also contributes to ensuring the safety of people living along the canal. This is an urgent task that requires the attention and participation of authorities at all levels and functional sectors.
