Quickly stabilize the lives of households in landslide areas

Due to the impact of prolonged heavy rains, in Co Mon and The Dun villages, Chieng An ward, there are cracks in the slopes and landslides, posing a potential risk to the safety of dozens of households. The local Party Committee and government have urgently evacuated and proposed a safe resettlement plan for the affected households to soon stabilize the people's lives.

Traces of the landslide in July 2024 at Mr. Tong Van Quan's family.

Recorded in The Dun village, many large landslides appeared since the flood in July 2024. Leading us around the area behind the house, Mr. Tong Van Quan pointed to the mud stains more than 2m high still clinging to the house wall, many pieces of window glass were broken by rocks and soil, still lying in place as if recalling the haunting memories of the night of the landslide.

Mr. Quan still feels scared when thinking about it. Now, whenever it rains heavily, the whole family does not dare to sleep at home, they have to sleep at the village cultural house. After that rain, I had to hire an excavator to level the landslide site before I could continue living. I hope the government will soon support me so that my family can have a safe, stable and long-term place to live, without having to worry about landslides anymore.

The landslide directly affects the poultry farming area of households.

Not only Mr. Quan's family, many other households are also in a similar situation. According to the villagers, since the rainy season of 2024, the severity of landslides has increased significantly, and the slopes have been eroded deeper. Most of the households are ethnic minorities, with difficult economic conditions, so they do not have the conditions to build new houses or move to safer places.

Officials of Chieng An ward and Co Mong village surveyed the danger level of the landslide in the village.

In Co Mon village, landslide risk response work is regularly deployed. Mr. Tong Van Quan, Party cell secretary and village head, said: The village has 85 households, 382 people, of which 21 households were affected by landslides. The village has organized propaganda, instructed people to recognize signs of landslides; set up communication lines in the village to provide timely information during floods; mobilized militia and youth union members to support the relocation of assets for households in dangerous areas. During heavy rains, we arrange 24/7 monitoring of the situation. When detecting increased risks, immediately move people to safety. Thanks to proactive measures, many incidents have minimized damage.

Through surveys, the area of Co Mon and The Dun villages has seen many landslides since the rainy season of 2024. Some households have been warned at a high level and need to be urgently relocated to ensure their safety. However, the relocation of all households in the risk area can only be carried out when there is a suitable resettlement location, a stable ground, and essential infrastructure systems such as roads, electricity, water, etc. to meet long-term living requirements.

Currently, Chieng An ward has urgently relocated 6 households in Co Mon and The Dun villages. There are still 27 households in The Dun village and 21 households in Co Mon village located in areas at risk of landslides, needing resettlement. This is an urgent need of the locality and a common wish of the people, especially in the context of unusual weather developments.

The People's Committee of Chieng An Ward has proposed to implement a project to build a safe residential area for households affected by natural disasters in The Dun and Co Mon villages. The project aims to move 48 households out of the danger zone. The resettlement area is expected to be about 2 hectares in size in Co Mon village, including the following items: Leveling houses with an average area of 200 - 250 m²/household; an internal traffic system of about 2,000 m long; a domestic water supply system for 48 households; a power supply system including a 35 kV line, a 100 kVA transformer station, and a 0.4 kV low-voltage line of 2,000 m long. The project is expected to have a total investment of about 24 billion VND.

Mr. Nghiem Van Tuan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng An Ward, said: The ward is actively coordinating with specialized agencies to assess the current geological status and prepare a dossier to propose investment in the resettlement area. While waiting for approval, we continue to warn and support households in dangerous areas to temporarily relocate when there is heavy rain. At the same time, we request that all levels promptly consider and arrange funding to implement the project. This is an urgent task to protect people's lives and property.

Relocating people from landslide areas is always a difficult task, requiring close coordination between the government and the people, but it is implemented step by step carefully, ensuring safety. Chieng An ward government commits to continue listening to people's opinions, removing difficulties in the implementation process; coordinating with functional units so that the resettlement project can be implemented soon, contributing to stabilizing the long-term lives of households in landslide areas.
