The sinkholes that appeared in Kim Lu commune are on average about 2-2.5m wide and about 4-7m deep. Most of the holes tend to expand and subside further after appearing.

According to the People's Committee of Kim Lu commune, the first two sinkholes appeared on March 24 in Hiep Luc village on people's rice fields.

On March 29, on National Highway 3B, at Km80+050, through Hiep Luc village, a large sinkhole appeared with a surface width of about 7m, a depth of about 5m, and water at the bottom of the sinkhole.

By the afternoon of the next day (March 30), a sinkhole appeared on the corn field of Ms. Ly Thi Thuy's household, only about 50m from National Highway 3B.

Not stopping there, on the morning of April 11, in Mr. Hoang Van Hieu's field, a new sinkhole appeared about 2m wide and about 7m deep.

On the morning of May 1, near the area of the sinkhole located in the middle of the median strip on Highway 3B, two more sinkholes appeared on both sides of the road corridor. The first hole was about 3m wide and about 7m deep, causing cracks in Mr. Hoang Van Thuy's yard, about 10m from the sinkhole location.

The second sinkhole was of similar size, located about 10 meters from Ms. Dam Thi Hien's house.

The area where the subsidence occurred in Hiep Luc village currently has 21 households with 92 people, and more than 12 hectares of agricultural land.

As of May 6, there have been 7 sinkholes and the cause of this phenomenon has not been assessed or determined.

According to Vice Chairman of Na Ri District People's Committee Luong Thanh Loc, the district has inspected and directed Kim Lu commune to organize the stretching of ropes and the installation of warning signs for people to proactively prevent. At the same time, it has issued documents and reports to seek direction from the province to support the district in having a plan to completely handle this situation.

What is worrying is that the development of sinkholes tends to increase, becoming more complicated, causing anxiety and insecurity for the people. Even for the sinkhole on Highway 3B, when the authorities filled the hole with rocks, hundreds of blocks of rocks that fell down were "swallowed" by the hole.

Faced with the situation that sinkholes could affect the safety of households, Na Ri district directed Kim Lu commune to mobilize local forces and people to support Ms. Dam Thi Hien's household and Mr. Dam Van Yeu's household to move to a safer place.

Vice Chairman of the Na Ri District People's Committee Luong Thanh Loc added that on May 6, the district continued to report to the province on the developments of the sinkholes. The district requested departments and branches to support the locality in implementing remedial solutions because the actual situation has exceeded the professional capacity of the district level, especially when the risk of further subsidence is very high.

Recently, the Institute of Geological Sciences and Mineral Resources ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) has coordinated with agencies of Bac Kan province and Na Ri district to inspect and survey the subsidence situation in Kim Lu commune. However, to determine the exact cause of this phenomenon, a project needs to be established and have time to implement.

Currently, people in Kim Lu commune are very worried about the subsidence situation. It is necessary to complete legal procedures soon to immediately carry out investigation, survey, and detailed research to determine the cause. From there, sustainable solutions can be proposed and implemented.
