Discovered by explorer Francisco Moreno in the 10th century, the Perito Moreno glacier covers an area of about 250 km2 and is about 30 km long. Perito Moreno is considered the most beautiful and oldest glacier in Argentina, with an estimated age of about 15,000 years.

Perito Moreno is one of 48 glaciers in the Andes, the world's longest mountain range, and is fed mainly by ice from Patagonia. This land is considered the end of the Earth because it is only about 1,000 km from Antarctica. Like other glaciers, Perito Moreno is formed entirely of snow. It is the world's third largest source of fresh water.

Ice calving is a natural phenomenon that occurs every summer at the Perito Moreno glacier. Many ice blocks are about 70m high (equivalent to a 20-story building). Recently, due to the impact of climate change, the number of large ice blocks calving has increased, causing the glacier area to shrink faster.
