Japanese police and a spokesman for East Japan Railway Company said that at around 9:45 p.m. on August 5, the JR train crashed into a power pole lying across the tracks between Fujisawa and Ofuna stations in Kanagawa Prefecture. The accident caused severe damage to the glass of the train's driver's cabin.

With the heatwave sweeping across Japan, passengers were initially asked to stay inside the train for safety. They were then guided by staff to walk to Ofuna Station. One passenger said the train's air conditioning was not working. Several people suffered heatstroke and were taken to hospital.
The accident caused disruption to other rail services, affecting the travel schedules of about 150,000 people. However, services were resumed at around 8am on August 6.
The East Japan Railway Company is currently investigating the cause of the incident.
