The debate over the Xiaomi YU7 2025 electric car was sparked by a post by Ai Tiecheng, former general manager of Nio’s Onvo brand, on the social media platform Weibo. In the post, Ai called on entrepreneurs and consumers to “support originality,” and asserted that “companies based on copying will not be sustainable.”

Although Mr. Ai later denied that his statement was aimed directly at the auto industry, many people still believe that this was a criticism aimed at Xiaomi - a brand that is facing many mixed opinions about the design style of its newly launched electric vehicles, including the YU7 and previously the SU7.

Tensions escalated when Ferrari China unexpectedly posted photos of its Purosangue SUV painted in the classic Verde Dora green color – a color chosen by founder Enzo Ferrari more than 60 years ago. Coincidentally, Xiaomi’s YU7 also appeared in a very similar emerald green color.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun was quick to explain that the YU7's paint job was inspired by Colombian emeralds, but that didn't stop netizens from dubbing the car the "Ferrari Mi," following the "Porsche Mi" nickname the SU7 sedan received upon its launch. Some even humorously thanked Lei Jun for "bringing Ferrari to the masses."

At the same time, the Ferrari Purosangue unexpectedly climbed to second place in China's online popularity rankings – just behind the Xiaomi YU7 and ahead of the Deepal S09 and SU7. This is not the first time Xiaomi has been embroiled in a design controversy.

When the SU7 was introduced, many people thought it looked like the Porsche Taycan. The CEO of Porsche China responded tactfully at the time, saying that "great minds think alike."

For his part, Lei Jun has always defended the view that Xiaomi's designs are original and carefully considered by the research and development team down to every detail.

The YU7 is an electric SUV developed on the Modena platform with large dimensions: 4,999 mm long, 1,996 mm wide, 1,608 mm high and a wheelbase of up to 3,000 mm. The car is introduced with 9 exterior color options, including emerald green, orange and metallic titanium.

The YU7 will be available in three configurations. The YU7 RWD with a single rear motor produces 315 horsepower, 528 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.88 seconds, with a top speed of 240 km/h. The YU7 Pro AWD with two motors produces a total of 489 horsepower, 690 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 4.27 seconds, with a top speed of 240 km/h.

The YU7 Max AWD version uses two motors for 681 horsepower and 866 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 3.23 seconds, maximum speed 253 km/h. All variants run on Xiaomi's 800V silicon carbide high-voltage platform, allowing a 5.2C charging speed that can increase the range to 620 km in 15 minutes.

The specific battery configurations and range estimates are as follows: RWD with 96.3 kWh LFP battery, 835 km range; Pro AWD with 96.3 kWh LFP battery, 770 km range; and Max AWD with 101.7 kWh NCM battery, 760 km range. Detailed pricing information will be announced at the official launch in July 2025.
