On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), the Oriental Development Research Institute - Hanoi Branch in collaboration with the National Political Publishing House Truth organized the third publication of the book Liberation by Tiziano Terzani.
Famous Italian journalist and writer Tiziano Terzani (1938-2004) wrote news, articles, and reports on major political and social events taking place in Asia for 30 consecutive years for the weekly Der Spiegel. He was one of the most famous reporters in East Asia and Southeast Asia and was a special correspondent for Der Spiegel in Southeast Asia.
He arrived in Saigon in 1971. In mid-March 1975, he received an order from the Saigon government to be expelled from South Vietnam on the grounds that one of his articles had offended President Nguyen Van Thieu. At that moment, Tiziano Terzani had a premonition that the end of the Republic of Vietnam regime had come, so he tried every way to stay in South Vietnam to witness the last moments of the war.
In April 1975, he was one of the few Western journalists who stayed in Saigon and became a witness to that historic moment. He witnessed the scene of the Liberation Army tanks entering the Independence Palace - ending the war to liberate the South and unify the country of the Vietnamese people.
After April 30, 1975, Tiziano Terzani was allowed to stay in Vietnam for another 3 months. During these 3 months, he traveled almost the entire length of Vietnam, met with high-ranking leaders of the Vietnamese Party and State; and witnessed the changes after April 30, 1975.
He was one of the journalists who actively opposed American intervention in Vietnam and publicly considered the struggle of the National Liberation Front of South and North Vietnam as a patriotic resistance of the Vietnamese people that needed world support.
Three months after the complete liberation of South Vietnam, Tiziano Terzani left Vietnam from Hanoi . In his suitcase, he brought 14 notebooks, 20 cassette tapes recording interviews, speeches, conversations with people on the street, and many volumes of newspapers, documents and translations.
It was from those documents that, at the end of 1975, he published the work Liberation, which recounts the last three days of the war before Saigon was liberated and the three months Tiziano Terzani observed Vietnam after reunification, entering the first stage of building socialism.
The book Liberation was translated from Italian into English by John Shepley and published by New York: St. Martin's Press in 1976. This book was republished in Thailand in 1997 under the name Saigon 1975: “3 Days and 3 Months”.
Italian journalist and writer Tiziano Terzani passed away on July 28, 2004 at the age of 65. His book left many impressions in the hearts of readers of many countries, contributing to praising revolutionary heroism, condemning unjust wars, and guiding people towards independence, freedom and happiness.
