Traditional culture plays a fundamental role in positioning the national brand, and at the same time, helps artists have a complete view of their creative journey.
Mr. Dao Minh Thanh - Chief Architect of Dao Studio said: "For Vietnamese artists, incorporating cultural elements into designs applied in life is instinctive, natural and it exists in the identity of every Vietnamese person. For me, if Vietnamese cultural materials can be used in designs, that is a wonderful thing."
One of the latest applications of him and his colleagues at Dao Studio is "Buffalo Bench" - a bench that is very familiar to us, shaped like a buffalo. "The way we created this Buffalo Bench is to use the most modern, simple, and powerful language, creating a suggestion for the observer that the chair resembles a buffalo, but we do not describe it. We create an object that makes it easy for people to recognize the image of a buffalo, an image familiar to Vietnamese people, but in a newer, more contemporary form," he added.

The combination of traditional and modern elements in furniture design brings unique products, both beautiful and culturally beautiful. Furniture not only has aesthetic value but also contains deep spiritual value, connecting people with their cultural roots. In addition, promoting tradition in design is also a source of inspiration for creativity and innovation, helping to create products with high applicability, aesthetics and humanity. But above all, it is the love and responsibility of Vietnamese designers for their cultural values.
At the beginning of the year of Giap Thin 2024, painter - sculptor Vu Dung created a unique artistic masterpiece called "Hi Long Van", a harmonious combination of traditional and contemporary visual language. (Photo: Thu Mai)
Painter - sculptor Vu Dung is the author of many exquisite sculptures of zodiac mascots. At the beginning of the year of Giap Thin 2024, he created a unique masterpiece of art called "Hi Long Van - Dragon holding a pearl curled up and hiding in the clouds", a harmonious combination of traditional and contemporary visual language. Talking about the creation of zodiac mascot artworks, painter Vu Dung believes that artists need to look at it from a different perspective, as a New Year's gift to the public. If painting and sculpture in the past gave people the view that works had to be lifelike to be considered art, then modern sculpture today has changed, its artistry lies in whether the spirit of the work makes people think of that mascot or not.
Architect Dao Huong is always concerned about how to incorporate traditional cultural features into design products. (Photo: Thu Mai)
Architect Dao Huong - Creative Director of KGM Asia, always worries about how to bring traditional cultural features into design products, and how to do it is a story. How to make traditional cultural features harmonize in contemporary design while being trendy? How to make traditional elements blend gently with contemporary features in architectural spaces? That is the question that Architect Dao Huong always asks herself before starting a project.
Among those projects, Smarana Hanoi Heritage is the first and only hotel in Hanoi built on the theme of Hang Trong folk paintings, under the direct advice of the last artist of this genre - Mr. Le Dinh Nghien; author of the book "Vietnamese Beauty from Hang Trong Paintings" - designer Trinh Thu Trang and architect Dao Thi Thanh Huong.

The hotel grounds are decorated like an exhibition, with the centerpiece being a collection of more than 50 paintings hand-painted by artist Le Dinh Nghien. However, the mark of the once-famous painting genre does not stop at decorative paintings, but also has lines, motifs, colors, and characteristics that are creatively and delicately expressed throughout the architectural space at Smarana Hanoi Heritage.
"For me, how to let heritage details or cultural details "infiltrate" into people's daily lives, or common design products is very important. In fact, after doing many traditional projects, I realized that, first of all, artists must love heritage, from there, we have to think about what we will take, which details we will select in the heritage and cultural values, how to convey them, all of which also need a story" - Architect Dao Huong emphasized.
At the seminar, designers, architects and artists also shared the advantages and disadvantages of applying traditional cultural details and elements in contemporary architecture. The opinions at the seminar brought new perspectives and opened up potentials for bringing traditional cultural and artistic values into daily life./.
