The swearing-in ceremony comes amid a political crisis in the South Caucasus nation, with the government freezing talks on joining the European Union (EU), leading to massive protests.

Meanwhile, outgoing Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili announced that she will leave the Presidential Palace in the capital Tbilisi after the inauguration of President-elect Mikheil Kavelashvili.

However, she will stay with the people of Georgia and fight for new parliamentary elections.

Mikheil Kavelashvili, 53, is a former footballer who played for English club Manchester City from 1995-1997, scoring three goals in 28 appearances.

He played 46 times for the national team, scoring 9 goals.

The politician has been a member of parliament since 2016 and is one of the founders of the People Power party, which split from the ruling party and has an anti-Western stance.

He co-authored Georgia's controversial "foreign agent" law, which requires organizations that receive more than 20% of their budget from foreign funding to declare them to the government and impose heavy fines for violations.
