(CT) - That was the opinion expressed by many delegates at the workshop "Sustainable development of the durian industry" chaired by Tien Phong Newspaper in coordination with relevant ministries, branches, localities and units organized on June 10, 2025. The workshop was held in Hanoi and connected online with many points across the country, with the participation of representatives of state management agencies from many central and local ministries, branches, along with many enterprises, associations, cooperatives, scientists, agricultural experts and many farmers.
In recent times, the area of durian cultivation in our country has continuously increased and durian has become one of the main agricultural export products, accounting for the largest proportion of export turnover among Vietnam's fruit exports. In 2024, the country's durian cultivation area reached 178,800 hectares, with an output of over 1.5 million tons and an export turnover of 3.2 billion USD, an increase of 42.2% over the previous year. However, the rapid development and growth of durian also poses many risks for both the production and consumption of the product, especially when durian importing countries increasingly demand high quality and safety standards of the product. Meanwhile, the development of durian cultivation by farmers in many places in our country in recent times has been spontaneous, production is fragmented and small-scale, making it difficult to manage quality and standardize production to meet market requirements. The production chain linkage is still limited and the process of purchasing, processing and consuming durian also has shortcomings and lacks synchronization, without good control and management, so there is still fraud in growing area codes and the presence of some banned substances such as amber, cadmium, etc., affecting exports. Notably, the export of durian from our country to the Chinese market has encountered many difficulties and decreased sharply in the first months of 2025. Therefore, it is necessary to have timely and synchronous solutions to overcome limitations, difficulties and stabilize the production and export of durian...
In order for the durian industry to develop sustainably, many delegates at the workshop recommended that it is necessary to strengthen chain linkages associated with transparency of the entire supply chain from production to preservation, processing and consumption of products to ensure and enhance the reputation and quality of Vietnamese durian. Enterprises need to promote the role of "locomotive" in the linkage chains, farmers need to strictly comply with the regulations and production processes recommended by the functional sector and enterprises ordering product purchases. State management agencies need to promptly have solutions and mechanisms to strictly control the input and output of the industry chain and support and promote linkages between farmers, enterprises and related parties. Review the planning of growing areas, enhance traceability and identification of growing area codes, apply information technology to make the entire supply chain transparent. Promote negotiations, expand markets and develop processing to diversify markets and products, avoid over-dependence on a few markets...

At the event, Mr. Ha Vu Son said that, in the face of many difficulties in exporting durian, promoting consumption in the domestic market is considered very necessary to help gardeners consume durian during the peak harvest season. Hai Phong City is a market with a lot of potential with a developed system of commercial centers and supermarkets, hoping to boost consumption for durian growers, opening up a new consumption market. With 3 flights/week between Can Tho - Hai Phong, it is a favorable condition to connect the consumption of goods between the two localities. Hopefully, from this connection in the future, a strong distribution channel will be created to exchange and consume agricultural products between the two localities.
This is a collaboration between Clean Durian Store 99 (Can Tho City) and Duong Minh Import-Export Joint Stock Company (Hai Phong City). The first order is about 2 tons of vacuum-packed segments. The durian selected is Ri6 durian to ripen naturally, the source is mainly from gardens in Phong Dien District, Can Tho City, the origin is traceable. This quantity of goods is transported in batches by air from Can Tho to Hai Phong to ensure fresh quality. It is known that Vietjet Air airline joins hands to support transportation costs with a 30% discount.
Along with the series of events of the first durian shipment arriving in Hai Phong City, on June 11, at Aeon Mall Hai Phong Commercial Center, the Department of Industry and Trade of Can Tho City coordinated with the Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong City to organize a festival connecting the consumption of durian from Can Tho City in Hai Phong City.
In recent times, trade promotion activities between the two cities have had many positive results. The Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong City has organized many delegations to participate in trade connection conferences in Can Tho City, thereby establishing cooperative relationships between businesses of the two cities and the southern provinces and cities. Besides durian, many other products of Can Tho are now available in the Hai Phong market such as rice, rice paper, and processed fish.
