Empowering and creating opportunities for women and girls to eliminate gender-based violence

On November 14, Can Tho City will organize the launching ceremony of the Month of Action for Gender Equality (BĐG) and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence in 2023 with the theme "Ensuring social security, increasing power and creating opportunities for women and girls to achieve gender equality and eliminate gender-based violence".

Right from the beginning of the year, the People's Committee of Can Tho city issued a plan to implement the National Strategy on Gender Equality in Can Tho city in 2023, which sets out the task of including gender and gender equality content in the curriculum in the nationaleducation system according to regulations and strives to achieve 80% of the population having access to basic knowledge on gender equality.

In recent times, many activities, programs and competitions to promote gender equality among students have been organized at schools in the city, helping students access basic knowledge about gender equality.

On the occasion of the Month of Action for Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence in 2023, Can Tho City continues to promote the dissemination of the themes, messages and activities of the Month of Action on local mass media in various forms, suitable for each target group and actual situation such as: Direct communication, propaganda on radio and television systems, grassroots information systems in communes, wards and towns, electronic information pages, social networks... publishing communication products on social security policies, the role of women, gender equality and prevention and response to violence and abuse against women and children.

Ms. Phan Quynh Dao, Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Can Tho City, said: In response to the Month of Action for Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence in 2023, the City Committee for the Advancement of Women organized forums, dialogues, seminars, workshops, and training courses on contents related to the theme of the Month of Action in 2023; promoting policies to ensure social security for people in general and women and children in particular, and the role of empowering women and girls in promoting gender equality.

Organize competitions on the topics of gender equality and gender-based violence, cultural and sports exchanges... organize activities to support victims, women and children in difficult circumstances; commend outstanding collectives and individuals in gender equality work, prevention and response to violence against women and children in general and the implementation of the Action Month 2023 in particular.

At the same time, mobilize resources to implement the Action Month, increase socialization of communication activities and support women and children in difficult circumstances, victims of abuse, violence, trafficking and exploitation. Strictly handle violations of gender equality, prevent and combat gender-based violence and implement support policies to ensure social security.

In recent times, the Committee for the Advancement of Women (VSTB) at all levels of the city has regularly coordinated with relevant sectors to promote the dissemination of the Party's policies and the State's laws; directive documents of the National Committee for the Advancement of Women of Vietnam; national plans and programs of the city related to gender equality and VSTB of women. In particular, it focuses on advising leaders of units and localities to create favorable conditions for women to develop in all aspects; pays attention to the work of female cadres, creates a source of female cadres that ensure quality and has appropriate plans for use; focuses on developing high-quality female human resources; pays attention to the proportion of female, young, ethnic minority cadres holding leadership and management positions at each level according to regulations. To complete the goals of the National Strategy on Gender Equality for the period 2021 - 2030 in Can Tho City, the Women's VSTB Committee of the city has solutions and plans such as: The Women's VSTB Committee of Can Tho City continues to advise on solutions and mechanisms for close inter-sectoral coordination to effectively implement gender equality and gender equality work for women in the city. At the same time, strengthen coordination in propagating gender equality and deploying support for localities and units to implement models of female workers in boarding houses, preventing and minimizing the harmful effects of gender-based violence, maintaining the implementation of regulations on support for the development and amendment of the Convention to ensure gender equality principles, enhancing women's participation in the fields of labor, employment, the model of Women Entrepreneurs Club, Women Start-ups, etc.

For the models of trusted addresses, community shelters and related models being implemented by local agencies and organizations, it is necessary to focus on reviewing and evaluating the effectiveness to have a plan to support funding to maintain operations, support participants, increase the benefits of services, and ensure readiness to support people when they need assistance. Strengthen forms of propaganda about the model so that people know and use the service when needed; improve the quality of the model's operations through training activities, professional development, rewards and recognition for core staff and collaborators. Coordinate inspection, supervision and evaluation of agencies, organizations and individuals in the work of preventing and responding to gender-based violence.

For the grassroots models of services for prevention and response to gender-based violence that have been built at the Social Work Center, strengthen coordination with agencies to improve the quality of services to support victims of violence; train and foster relevant knowledge and skills for staff and employees tasked with supporting victims of violence and perpetrators of violence.

Widely introduce the phone number 18008065 providing support, prevention and response services to gender-based violence at the Social Work Center under the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of the city for people to contact when they need support.
