Tricks to deceive people's trust
According to the Gia Lai Provincial Police Portal , in recent days, many people in Bong Son Ward, Gia Lai Province reported that they continuously received calls from the numbers 0859589816, 0833485592 and 0852748974. The subject impersonated Bong Son Ward police officers and called parents to request personal information of students to make level 2 electronic identification or asked citizens to go to the Ward Police to make level 2 electronic identification accounts.

The ward police confirmed that this is one of the sophisticated methods and tricks of fraudsters to appropriate property: Normally, bad guys will directly call personal mobile phone numbers, pretending to be police officers to create trust and request people to come to the nearest police headquarters to supplement, edit, update, and complete their population data. They often call and request during office hours, working hours... so that people cannot arrange their time, refuse the request to "come to the police headquarters" and work and exchange information directly over the phone.
At that time, they requested to supplement, edit, and update information about residents through downloading and installing fake VNeID applications and sending applications and links with logos similar to the VNeID application of the Ministry of Public Security. These are applications and links containing many types of viruses, malware, malicious software... used to take control of the victim's phone (for a short time or long-term monitoring); gradually collect account information and passwords of various applications to conduct transactions (through banking applications, e-wallets...) against the will of the account owner to appropriate property.
The money they appropriate can be transferred through unofficial accounts (registered and used by the subjects) to limit the ability of authorities and victims to track them down.
Ms. Nguyen Thi H., 42 years old, residing in Bong Son ward, received a call from an unknown number claiming to be a police officer of the ward. This person said that she needed to update the electronic identification information for her child who is in elementary school, otherwise her VNeID account would be locked. Worried, Ms. H. followed the instructions and downloaded the application "VNeID update 2025" from the link sent via text message. Just a few minutes after logging in with her bank account to "verify her identity", the entire amount of more than 50 million VND in her account was transferred.
Mr. Tran Van N., 67 years old, living in Hoai Tan ward, received a call from someone claiming to be the “Chief of Ward Police” saying that his identification file had errors and needed to be corrected immediately. When he showed doubts, the subject immediately read out his full name, address and old ID number, making him believe it was true. However, when this person asked him to scan the QR code to “reactivate the account”, his son promptly discovered the abnormality and reported it to the local police. Thanks to that, Mr. N. was lucky to escape the sophisticated scam.
Identify and handle properly
Currently, the VNeID application has been gradually completed by the Ministry of Public Security. In addition, the ward police force will directly go to each house to guide or invite people to the headquarters to update resident information; absolutely do not require people to do it by phone.
It can be seen that, in the condition that people participate and operate more and more in cyberspace, the use of VNeID application is gradually becoming more frequent; from there, bad elements always create new tricks, forms and methods of fraud, causing increasingly serious consequences, causing huge losses of money and assets among the people.
From the above situation, Bong Son Ward Police recommends that officers and people in the ward need to be vigilant with the methods and tricks of criminals to proactively prevent and spread warning information to relatives and the community; pay attention and be cautious when texting and communicating but have not yet determined exactly which organizations and individuals they are; at the same time, strictly implement a number of principles such as:
- Do not access links, download strange applications or follow instructions from strangers, especially when done via phone or text message.
- Do not provide information to anyone (including banks) including: Login password, OTP authentication code, PIN code; activation code and other security information.
- Only use or make transactions on official platforms and applications provided by legitimate authorities (pay attention to review and check information of the manufacturer and application developer).
- If you find any suspicious signs, you can refuse any request from a stranger (especially those claiming to be from the Police, Army, Procuracy, Court, etc.). At the same time, request to meet in person, work with, or call the official phone number of the authorities regarding the above suspicious signs.
- Proactively review and check your children's identification information on the national population database system. If the information is incorrect or incomplete, update it via the VNeID application or contact the ward police directly for support and guidance.
- When being defrauded of property, people need to quickly report directly to the ward police headquarters at 59 Tran Phu, Bong Son ward, Gia Lai province or through the Bong Son ward police hotline: 02563.861.749 to be protected and handled promptly.
The Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention, Ministry of Public Security, emphasized that phone scams are becoming more sophisticated, including the spoofing of trusted phone numbers. "People need to verify information through official channels before making any transactions," the Department representative said. The Department also recommended increasing the use of security software and regularly checking bank accounts to detect unusual transactions early.
The National Cyber Security Association recommends using security software such as nTrust to detect malware and prevent phishing attacks. It also recommends never clicking on strange links sent via text messages or emails. The association also said it is working with authorities to raise public awareness of cyber security threats.
Mr. Vu Ngoc Son, Head of Technology Department, National Cyber Security Association, warned that online fraud attacks will continue to be rampant in 2025. Besides measures from management agencies, users still need to raise their vigilance and safety skills when participating in cyberspace.
Do not share personal information with people you do not know or services you do not trust. Carefully verify any calls or communications regarding money transfers.
