According to Stripes news site, the US aircraft carrier USS Nimitz has reached an important milestone with 350,000 aircraft landings on the deck using arresting cables in the ship's nearly 50 years of operation.
The record was set on April 22 when an F/A-18F Super Hornet successfully landed on the deck of the USS Nimitz while it was deployed in the South China Sea.
“I am honored to mark this historic milestone for the ship. I would like to thank the previous landings by naval aviators,” said Capt. Craig Sicola, commanding officer of the Nimitz and pilot of the fighter jet that landed on April 22.
Admiral Christopher Sweeney, commander of Carrier Strike Group 11, said this milestone demonstrates America's commitment to freedom of navigation and overflight anywhere in the world to promote peace and security.
An arresting cable landing is when an aircraft makes contact with the aircraft carrier and hooks its tail onto one of four cables arranged on the deck, allowing it to come to a safe stop. The deck of an aircraft carrier is not long enough for planes to land in the conventional manner.
USS Nimitz is the first Nimitz-class aircraft carrier of the US Navy, commissioned in 1975. Currently, it is the oldest aircraft carrier in the world still in service.
The ship is part of Carrier Strike Group 11, based near Seattle, USA. It is on a regularly scheduled deployment to the 7th Fleet area of operations in the South China Sea.
