On November 27, the 33rd SEA Games Organizing Committee held a meeting, chaired by Minister of Tourism & Sports Attakorn Sirilatthayakon, to rearrange the group in men's football. According to Thairath , the final decision from the 33rd SEA Games Organizing Committee was to move U22 Singapore (seed group number 4) from group C to group A.
Previously, Thai media reported that the 33rd SEA Games Organizing Committee considered two options to re-divide the group. One is to re-draw the entire group after excluding U22 Cambodia. The re-drawing option is considered complicated and unfeasible when the 33rd SEA Games is approaching. Meanwhile, the second option is to move U22 Singapore to group A, which is considered the most reasonable given the current situation.
With U22 Singapore replacing Cambodia, Group A is expected to be more dramatic and unpredictable. Group B remains the same with the competition between U22 Vietnam, U22 Malaysia and U22 Laos. Meanwhile, Group C will be less fierce with U22 Indonesia, U22 Myanmar and U22 Philippines remaining.
According to the format of men's football at the 33rd SEA Games, the top 3 teams in each group will advance straight to the semi-finals. The remaining spot in the semi-finals will be given to the second-placed team with the best record.
Cambodia U22 announced their withdrawal before the 33rd SEA Games began. In addition to men's football, the Cambodian sports delegation withdrew from 7 other team events due to security reasons. Cambodia only sent athletes to compete in individual sports at the 33rd SEA Games.
SEA Games 33 started on December 9 and ended on December 20. This year, Thailand is the host, organizing 50 sports. Before the opening of SEA Games 33, the host encountered a major incident when Songkhla province - where 10 sports were held - was severely flooded. In the latest meeting of the SEA Games 33 Organizing Committee, the sports planned to take place in Songkhla province will be moved to Bangkok to ensure safety and schedule.
