Bad weather threatens English football

This week, lower league football in England was thrown into chaos as many matches were postponed or abandoned due to heavy rain and flooding.

A series of English football matches were affected by extreme weather.

The Met Office has issued an amber "danger to life" warning, prompting football teams and fans to brace for severe weather.

Matches in the National League North were severely affected, with Southport playing Alfreton Town, Hereford playing Marine, and South Shields playing Peterborough Sports all postponed. In games that had already started, such as Spennymoor playing Chester, the referee was forced to stop play with the visitors leading 2-0.

A similar situation occurred in the Northern Premier Division, when Cleethorpes vs Whitby, Gainsborough vs Hyde or Blyth Town vs Redcar Athletic could not take place, while Hallam FC's match against Dunston was abandoned mid-match.

Some other matches, such as Heaton Stannington vs Grimsby Borough, had to be abandoned at half-time because of flooding. However, tournaments in the National League (5th tier of England - PV) and above were largely unaffected.

The weather in England is unpredictable.

Mike Silverstone, deputy director of the Met Office, said Wales and north-west England were the worst affected areas. Yellow warnings were also issued for south-west and north-west England and parts of central and north Wales.

"Heavy rain will hit South Wales from Sunday evening and into Monday. Accumulations of up to 100-120mm are possible in higher areas, while lower areas could see 20-40mm," said Mike Silverstone.

The bad weather is expected to continue into next week, with heavy rain expected from Sunday night to Tuesday, following last week when parts of the UK were hit by heavy snow and temperatures dropped to -12°C, forcing schools to close and the Met Office to issue a rare "thunder snow" warning.

With this situation, the lower league football schedule in England will certainly be disrupted, while clubs and players face unprecedented challenges from nature.
