Zirkzee had a poor day. |
Old Trafford had another gloomy day as MU fell 0-1 to Everton despite their opponents playing with one less man for most of the match. The only goal came from a beautiful curling shot from 18 meters by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens got a hand to the ball but could not save it.
The defeat left coach Ruben Amorim's team heavily criticized, and the focus was on Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutch striker was given his second chance to start this season, but his performance left fans furious.
Zirkzee missed two of MU's best chances in the second half. Social media immediately exploded with criticism. "Zirkzee asked for a chance, was given a chance and wasted it!", "Letting Zirkzee play the full 90 minutes was a terrible decision", "If Zirkzee is the answer, I don't know what the question is", "Sell Zirkzee now"... were the common reactions of MU fans.
MU struggled to attack despite Everton being down to 10 men midway through the first half, after Idrissa Gueye received a red card for a collision during an argument with his teammate Michael Keane. However, the stalemate in the play and Zirkzee's lackluster performance meant the "Red Devils" could not find an equalizer.
Coach Amorim was forced to put his faith in Zirkzee due to injuries to both Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha. However, this option contributed to MU suffering another embarrassing defeat at Old Trafford.
