The quiet profession of "counting the wind and measuring the rain"

Việt NamViệt Nam03/10/2024

(VLO) In order to proactively respond to the impacts of weather, providing timely weather forecasts and warnings is an extremely important and urgent task. Over the years, the work of observers and forecasters has always been quiet, hard-working but extremely important, and has been contributing significantly to the prevention and mitigation of natural disasters as well as effectively serving the economic and social development of the locality.

“Taking the pulse” of… God

Quietly, silently, regardless of rain or shine, wind or storm, hydrometeorologists still work day and night diligently with their work of "counting wind, measuring rain", striving to bring people the most accurate information.

Many forecasters share that weather forecasting is a difficult and complicated problem, especially in tropical countries like Vietnam in general and Vinh Long province in particular.

To create highly accurate weather forecast products, forecasters must ensure that they collect all necessary data sources, including data and outputs of numerical forecast models. Most importantly, the human factor always plays a central and important role in ensuring forecast quality.

That means forecasters must be updated, improve their professional knowledge, practical skills and practical experience as well as their sense of professional responsibility. In addition, they must be persistent, spend a lot of time researching, observing model products, and draw their own conclusions to make the most accurate forecasts possible.

With more than 10 years of experience in the profession, Mr. Tran Quoc Vy, a forecaster at the Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, shared: Technology has been improved and modernized, but weather and hydrology are increasingly complex and unpredictable, so machines still cannot completely replace humans.

During thunderstorms, strong winds, and large waves, the staff of hydrographic surveyors continue to work. Or when the weather changes and thunderstorms tend to move to the province, they will find every way to quickly send out warnings and immediately transfer them to the Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command via the Zalo application.

“Each number, each news bulletin represents a sense of responsibility for the profession, a dedicated service attitude, not afraid of difficulties or hardships of those assigned to work shifts, broadcast news bulletins... with the purpose of allowing the community to access and recognize phenomena early in order to proactively prevent and mitigate damage caused by natural disasters.

To meet the increasingly better job requirements, I always determine to continuously learn and improve my knowledge and experience from previous generations and colleagues working in other units" - Mr. Vy shared.

Recalling his most memorable experience in the profession, Mr. Vy said: “The most memorable moment for me was on Christmas 2017 when storm Tembin (storm number 16) headed towards the South. In preparation for the storm, the entire agency was on duty 24/7 at the headquarters, the meteorological station was ready to receive orders to monitor data every hour or even every 30 minutes.

Due to the dangerous nature of the river, the hydrological station had to move the vehicles to a safer anchorage. The office conducted discussions between the central and local bridgeheads, issuing a bulletin every 3 hours updating the location and path of the storm.

Fortunately, the storm entered the sea area south of Ca Mau and weakened without causing significant damage in Vinh Long province. That was a period of continuous work of 48 hours to monitor and forecast the storm.

Contribute to preventing and mitigating natural disasters

Although it is hard, many people choose to pursue a career in hydrometeorology and consider the job of "reading the pulse of heaven" a source of happiness, because not only do they love the job, but they are also passionate about the job from the first days of attachment until now.

Sharing the reason for choosing the profession, Ms. Phuong Nhung - a forecaster at the Provincial Hydrometeorological Station expressed: "When I was young, I often wondered about weather phenomena such as why it rains, why rain often comes with thunder and lightning, why sometimes the rain just passes and then stops, but there are also persistent rains,...

To answer my own questions, I researched and decided to study and pursue this field. When doing this job of “diagnosing the weather”, I realized that there are still many interesting things about the weather that I need to continuously continue to learn, research, and explore because the weather changes every day and it is not easy for people to predict. That is the reason why I love my current job even more.

Although I have not worked in the industry for much time, just over 2 years, I see the significance and importance of forecasting work for the locality and the people. Especially Vinh Long is my hometown, so I want to contribute to my hometown through weather forecasts and warnings to limit the damage caused by dangerous weather to the people and help people be more proactive in their daily life and production.

According to Ms. Nhung, in recent years, weather phenomena have become increasingly complex and unpredictable. To reduce errors in forecasting, she must always study forecasting technology courses and increase her reference to domestic and foreign models to improve her professional skills.

Participate in training courses and training courses organized by regional stations, always take time to learn from colleagues - people with rich experience and knowledge. Do not falter in the face of difficulties, persevere, strive to complete assigned tasks and forecasting work to serve the locality, know how to absorb and apply digital transformation to forecasting work.

Mr. Truong Hoang Giang - Director of the Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, said: Weather and hydrological information plays a particularly important role in people's lives, and at the same time helps functional sectors and localities have the earliest information to direct and operate natural disaster prevention and response to climate change. However, weather and hydrological developments in the locality are increasingly complex, unpredictable and require local service, so the forecasting team must work continuously throughout the week.

In the coming time, the Provincial Hydrometeorological Station will increase participation in training courses, professional development, training on technology transfer of observation and forecasting to improve the quality of human resources in the direction of streamlining, efficiency, innovation and increasing labor value. Supplement human resources from universities with majors in hydrometeorology, oceanography or on-site training for healthy, agile people who can meet job requirements.
