On July 5, the Ministry of Information and Communications issued an official announcement on the roadmap to stop 2G mobile technology. Accordingly, subscribers using phones that only support 2G will stop service from September 2024 and by September 2026, 2G waves will be completely turned off, except for cases of service provision in the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa archipelagos and DK platforms.
3G technology is expected to be discontinued in September 2028. The decision to shut down 2G and 3G is based on the fact that this technology consumes a lot of energy without providing high performance. The discontinuation of these technologies will create conditions for the development of 4G and 5G to bring better experiences to users.
Currently, most countries in Europe and North America have already started shutting down 2G and 3G. In our country, the shutdown needs to have a roadmap so that users are least affected. 2G technology will be stopped in 2 phases, while 3G technology will be provided until September 2028.
Viettel is the first network operator in our country to widely shut down 3G network, followed by Vinaphone and Mobiphone.
Experts say that turning off 2G and 3G waves will help network operators simplify their networks and optimize infrastructure to develop new technologies.
