Thang Binh prevents rabies in dogs and cats

At the end of April, Mr. PVĐ's household (Vinh Xuan village, Binh Trung commune) raised 7 dogs that had not been vaccinated against rabies. The dogs were kept chained in a fenced yard and had no contact with dogs outside.

On April 26, a dog showed signs of not eating, vomiting, red eyes, drooling, and unusual howling. The sick dog bit the homeowner and his wife and two other dogs. Those who were bitten went to the medical center for preventive treatment and reported to medical staff . The remaining dogs are being chained by the homeowner for monitoring.

On April 28, the Agricultural Technical Center of Thang Binh District took samples from dogs suspected of having the disease and sent them for diagnosis. On April 29, the Veterinary Department of Region V announced that the sample sent for testing was positive for rabies virus.

After detecting the rabies virus, since the beginning of May, the locality has conducted a review and statistics of the number of dogs and cats in 7 villages; at the same time, it requires households to fully vaccinate their pets.

Mr. Duong Thanh Tri - Vice Chairman of Binh Trung Commune People's Committee said: "When there is rabies virus in a household, we proceed to disinfect the entire area, immediately isolate and contain the epidemic. Households raising dogs and cats in this village are required to be fully vaccinated. Up to this point, veterinary forces have continuously been present in the village to vaccinate more than 100 doses of vaccine for dogs and cats, reaching a rate of 100%".

In recent days, Mr. Duong Dinh Ngoc (veterinary officer of Binh Trung commune) and 4 other officers have been on duty in the villages to speed up the progress of rabies vaccination on dogs and cats.

According to Mr. Ngoc, during hot weather, the risk of rabies in dogs and cats is very high. Therefore, when people register their need for vaccination, the veterinary force will immediately start the vaccination. The current difficulty is that most households keep dogs and cats free, so they have to wait for the households to lock them up, and have a force follow them to catch them for vaccination.

“After checking, the whole commune has more than 600 dogs and cats. Currently, 50% of the total herd has been vaccinated. We are speeding up the progress of rabies vaccination for households in need. Most households comply with the vaccination of dogs and cats,” said Mr. Ngoc.

Regarding measures to prevent and control animal rabies, recently, the People's Committee of Thang Binh district requested communes, towns, relevant agencies and units to focus on allocating sufficient resources to synchronously implement disease prevention and control measures such as: vaccinating dogs and cats against rabies; requiring household owners to commit to managing dogs and cats raised in the family's premises, not letting dogs and cats roam freely and affecting people around and ensuring environmental hygiene; strictly directing the registration of dog and cat breeding with the commune-level authorities...

Along with Binh Trung commune, other localities are currently reviewing and implementing rabies vaccination for dogs and cats. Mr. Tran Vu Bao - Deputy Director of the Agricultural Technical Center of Thang Binh district said that the unit has sent forces to strengthen surveillance to detect rabies cases in animals; disseminate and guide technical solutions to control rabies, and guide measures to handle outbreaks according to regulations.

The center provides enough vaccines for rabies vaccination for dogs and cats; provides technical guidance and additional training on vaccination techniques for veterinary staff at the grassroots level when requested by the grassroots level; coordinates and shares information on rabies and suspected rabies cases with health agencies to focus on guiding, zoning, and controlling the risk of disease to humans...
