Sublimation at US Women's Open, Maja Stark brings Swedish women's golf back to the top

TPO - The victory at Erin Hills not only brought Maja Stark her first major title, but also marked the strong return of Swedish women's golf after nearly two decades of absence from the top of the US Women's Open.

History of naming

Maja Stark performed consistently over four days of competition to win the 2025 US Women's Open, her first major title, and a historic victory on the challenging Erin Hills course.

With a final round of even par (72 strokes), the 25-year-old Swedish golfer finished the tournament with a total score of -7 (281 strokes), 2 strokes ahead of his two closest rivals, world number one golfer Nelly Korda and Japanese representative Rio Takeda.

The win earned Stark a $2.4 million prize, the highest of the women's golf season this year. She became the sixth Swedish woman in history to win a major title, and the first since Anna Nordqvist at the 2021 Women's British Open.

Notably, this is the first time a Swedish golfer has won the US Women's Open in nearly two decades, since the legendary Annika Sorenstam in 2006.

Stark also has her second LPGA Tour title, following her victory at the 2022 ISPS Handa World Invitational in Northern Ireland, an event co-hosted by the Ladies European Tour.

In the final round, Korda shot 71 (-1), Takeda kept even par (72). Hye-Jin Choi (68), Ruoning Yin (70) and Mao Saigo (73) tied for fourth place with a score of -4, while Hailee Cooper (70) and Hinako Shibuno (74) followed closely behind with a score of -3.

Courage makes the difference

Entering the final day with a one-stroke lead, Stark insisted she would play freely and comfortably, not letting her anxiety overwhelm her. “Nobody has ever played well when they let themselves be afraid. And that was my habit, trying to cling to the advantage,” Stark shared.

This time, her determination helped her maintain her lead from start to finish, despite close pursuit from the competing group.

For world No. 1 Korda, this is the closest she has come to winning the U.S. Women's Open. Her previous best finish was a tie for eighth at Pine Needles in 2022.

Korda had a chance to share the lead after birdies at holes 7 and 8, but missed a 9-foot birdie putt at hole 9, just minutes after Stark's 21-hole bogey streak ended at hole 7.

Stark responded immediately with a 15-foot birdie at the 11th hole, then watched Korda miss a 5-foot par putt at the 13th. This allowed Stark to extend his lead to three strokes.

Although Korda, Shibuno and Takeda all birdied the par-5 14th hole to close the gap, they could not capitalize on the opportunity. Korda missed an eagle from 4.27 meters, and Shibuno also missed an eagle from less than 3 meters.

Immediately after that, Stark successfully made a birdie at the 14th hole to restore the 3-stroke gap, bringing the total score to -9. Despite making 2 consecutive bogeys on the last 2 holes, she still maintained the victory and touched the most prestigious trophy of the season.

Stark's teammate Julia Lopez Ramirez dropped out of the race early after a round of 79, including a bitter triple bogey on the 18th hole, and finished in a tie for 19th place.
