Cong Phuong leaves Vietnam national team due to injury

Sources from Tri Thuc - Znews confirmed that striker Cong Phuong will say goodbye to the Vietnamese team, unable to continue preparing for the match against Malaysia on June 10, in Group F of the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup.

The reason is that Cong Phuong suffered a bruised fatty tissue under the sole of his foot. This is a minor injury that will take 2 weeks to recover, but the time to concentrate on the Vietnamese national team is short so this striker cannot be in the best condition for the match with Malaysia.

Previously, coach Kim Sang-sik created conditions for Cong Phuong to practice recovery at the hotel on May 31 and June 1.

On the afternoon of June 2, this striker returned to normal training, showing positive performance on the training ground. Coach Kim even assigned him the role of central ball distributor with Hoang Duc and Quang Hai.

To replace Cong Phuong's position, the coaching staff of the Vietnamese team will promote Nguyen Quoc Viet (HAGL) from the U22 team that is training in parallel.

On the first day of the Vietnam national team's training session on the afternoon of May 30, Cong Phuong shared his wish to quickly adapt to Coach Kim's playing style, thereby being able to contribute his best to the national team.

"Not only me, all the players try their best to get into the rhythm and perform their best in the eyes of the coaching staff. My teammates and I try our best. Everyone is eager to play. If given the opportunity, I will try my best to perform well, for the responsibility and for the common goal of the team," said the striker of Binh Phuoc Club.

The last time Cong Phuong played for the Vietnamese national team was in September 2023. He scored the opening goal to help the team win 2-0 against Palestine in an international friendly match at Thien Truong Stadium.

In March 2024, Cong Phuong continued to be called up by coach Philippe Troussier to prepare for the match against Indonesia, the first leg of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. But at that time, the striker born in 1995 had a relapse of his ankle injury and had to rest for treatment and recovery.
